This is undoubtedly a controversial book and one which has split its readers (both academic and popular) but for that very reason is worth reading. Prof Warnicke takes a quite provocative stance in reading Anne as the victim of superstition and Henry's desperation for a male child; and attributes her fall and execution to the 'fact' that she gave birth to a deformed child which Henry needed to disassociate himself from.

The fact that Warnicke is prepared to challenge centuries of male interpretations of Anne is to be applauded; and positioning her within the cultural superstitions about witchcraft and the mysteries of a woman's body (from a male persepctive) is an interesting take on this period. That doesn't, of course, make it 'right' ... Read More:

I have the priveledge of actually being taught by the great Graham Darby, and have found all the books he wrote both useful and insightful. I would recommend all prospective readers to ignore the comments of the review above. I will agree that the book maybe be lacking in certain details concerning 'Pobedonostsev', but this book was never intended for critical research. It is designed to give the reader an overview of the period as a whole, sparking their intrigue and compelling them to do further, more in depth reseasrch. In this objective it excels quite commendably.

Rawls attempts to find a single point of measurement for liberalism in this book. But unless we have the room or time to have a proper debate this book should only be reviewed in light of the contribution it makes.

A theory of justice set the scene for a liberal revival in 70's but this book is about reflecting on the criticisms he received and incorporating them once agian into a logical and systematic progression of thoguht. The failrue of some is to think that this is supposed to BE Liberalism - this misses the point all liberal thinkers are merely contributions to a ever modified debate. A more radical view would be to counter the notion of progressive history and suggest that this firmly shifts the basis for Liberal thoguht.

This is a truly outstanding work, which was written in the 1830s but still has much to teach us about democracy and about America. If those two subjects were better understood today the world would be a far pleasanter place to live! In the course of his enquiry Tocqueville examines history, legal and political systems, the economy, the arts, relationships between the races and much more, in what amounts to a general reflection on human institutions under democracy. Everyone should read this book, not only Americans or those interested in America, as the need for urgent reflection on the democratic project goes much wider. And in fact, one could say that the work itself is democratic in the sense that it is jargon-free and a pleasure to read, and thus accessible to ... Read More:

188.The Graves are Not Yet Full: Race, Tribe and Power in the Heart of Africa by: Bill Berkeley

This is a frightening book, but perhaps one of the most important ever written on the state of the continent over the last 10 years. The author destroys all the myths about tribal politics in Africa, especially that old chestnut about 'age old tribal hatreds' we hear so often in the western media. He shows that most of these hatreds were no more than mere rivalries, but that in modern times these rivalries and prejudices against other tribes have been manipulated and turned into hatred. This has been largely the work of, not military dictators like Amin, but the so called 'intellectuals'. In Rwanda the power of radio broadcasts is shown in its full devastating results with the constant encouragement to continue the killing, because 'the graves are not yet full'.

It almost goes without saying, now, that this is a work of enormous erudition, its primary subject certainly worthy of the skill and effort that produced it. John Enoch Powell was a fascinating man and a real thinker; his life was almost unbelievably strange but very significant. We are fortunate that Simon Heffer has seen fit to devote his attention to the man, his life & his times.
I would suggest that people who are initially uninterested in the man or his politics, indeed politics at all, can learn a lot from this enormous book. The way that a deeply non-racist man can, despite a rare level of articulacy, come to be seen as the friend of nationalist thugs gives us insight into the traits that are now referred to as Asperger syndrome; so do a great many descriptions ... Martin Bell, the BBC reporter and Independent MP from 1997 to 2001, has written a scorching book on the Labour Party's record in government. Its 1997 election manifesto promised, "We will clean up politics. ... Our mission in politics is to rebuild this bond of trust between government and the people." But, as Bell writes, "on the issue on which it was elected, public trust in public life, its record was wholly, completely and unforgivably negative."

Bell calls the House of Commons the `House of Ill Repute', describing the cash-for-peerages scandal, and the insult of state funding for parties. A government inquiry proposed an extra £23 million a year, on top of the current £5.6 million.

He notes that the Prime Minister appoints members of the national assembly, and ... Read More:
