Nigel Knight's book is an incisive critique of Churchill and his impact on the country. It goes far beyond just the war and has fascinating insights into his often negative and inconsistent actions, which for too long have been glossed over by biased historians. I found it to be a terrific and original read.

When I'm sick of Radio 4, I occasionally listen to this. No modern politician that I can think of can compare with Churchill; he makes you realize just how poor at speaking many of them are.
Of course he had far more dramatic subject-matter. And this CD helps you to imagine what it must have been like in the war, when you might have listened to some of these speeches on the wireless. They can be very moving.

Some of them are read by Winston S. Churchill - Sir Winston's grandson - because recordings of the man himself couldn't be found. Also I've noticed in the bookshop you can buy this CD as one in a set of three.

Having admired Mr Starkey's previous works both the written word and his televison work, I found this book very disappointing. Rather than a detailed history of our Royal Houses from the middle ages what he gave us was just a bland and non discript overview. There was no passion in his writing and he did reveal anything new about the various kings and queens that we didn't already know. There were parts of the book which I found interesting but then just pittered out and went onto the monarch's successor without fully exploring his subject.
Mr Starkey obviously loves his subject matter, it is just a pity he didn't do justice to it this time around.

I enjoyed reading this book and while a lot of it was a re-hash of information that I had already picked up before I think that it is good for beginners or a memory jogger.

This is a very readable book - I enjoyed it and chomped my way through it in no time at all. (Bite sizes structure made it splendid reading on the loo in fact!).

Seldon has clearly had great access to Blair's advisors, though it's a bit light on new material from Blair's politician peers. There's a lot lifted from autobiographies from people like Campbell and Blunkett.

Analysis of issues is strong: very balanced and concise.

But - other than the marvelous blow by blow section on how Blair and his team handled the 7/7 bombings - the book a bit short on the human interest details that could have made this a really great book.

As it stands it's well worth a read for people interested in general modern UK politics, ... Read More:

This book will provide the reader with an insight into the minutae of how the Labour Party was run over the last 50 years, but from an interesting viewpoint. You see although the party was ostensibly socialist, for Benn and his fellow travellers, it was not quite socialist enough. To be truly socialist, the Labour Party was to transform British life to make it indistinguishable from, say, East Germany or Roumania. By this I do not mean that it had to be dominated by the Soviet Union or have a repressive state security apparatus (although those seem to be have been a prerequisite for being a socialist country in Europe in the period in question), but the way the country conducted itself in social, economic and political affairs, with committees and voting on everything, ... This is a good book which focuses on events rather than providing analysis. I would have much preferred the book to come from a more human, emotional perspective though.
I didn't feel as though the book was written with the passion that a subject like this deserves. Normally a partisan view of things is not warranted, but a subject like this without a measure of passion ultimately falls flat. It just lacked feeling, and the description of events became monotonous and perfunctory. The fact that Kee is English, not Irish , probably had something to do with this. His sense of reserved detachment never falters but alas this provides little piquancy for the reader.

Most of the books 750 pages are confined to the 19th century and consequently you become lost ... Read More:

40.Chomsky on Anarchism by: Noam Chomsky

This is not a theoretical book; Chomsky does not see himself as an anarchist thinker but rather as a "fellow traveler" and so this collection of interviews, talks, and essays spaning from the early 1970s to 2004 contains no original theory from the man himself. Chomsky is as accessible as ever however and this book's interviews will give a reader new to anarchist thought a firm idea of what anarchists are against, and what they are for, with further elaboration of Chomsky's own critique of capitalism, state and government, and their alternatives in the essays and talks.
