I haven't got a great deal to say that other reviewers haven't already said. This was a good and detailed book although I had already picked up most of ideas from other sources and I think that it may have been a bit verbose in parts.

Hitchens is always a good, if controversial read. His opinions are well founded and often well researched. This book tells you why UK society has been broken, why it might never recover and who did it. The devastation that has been waged while the UK has slept is truly shattering. I dont always agree with Hitchens and his opinions, but here he is dealing with hard edged fact. Fact that will enrage you and by the end of book will make you wonder what you have to do to change the social re engineering that the UK has suffered at the hands of the do gooders who have not always fully understood the ramifications of their handiwork. Hitchens covers everything from the Church of England to Law. Hitchens will admit that this book is out of date by 10 years ... Read More:

It's tough for anyone to write a biography of Napoleon because so very many people have already done it before, making it hard to make a new book distinct and different. Philip Dwyer broadly succeeds in doing this, but his book remains only a partial success all the same.

Indeed, it was the most obviously 'new' thing Dwyer has to say about Napoleon that I found amongst the least interesting aspects of the book. Essentially, Dwyer portrays Napoleon as what today we would term a spin doctor par excellence. OK, fine, Napoleon did use art and newspapers and proclamations to portray himself in a particular, very favourable light, but then he was a political figure, so what do you expect? That's not meant as a general slur at politicians, ... Read More:

This is an excellent book in many respects, but contains a major flaw that destroys the entire argument.
Conrad Black is unclear why FDR wanted war with Hitler. On the one hand he seems to believe Germany was no threat to the USA, and quotes without comment Stalin's toast (p1063) to the leader of the USA, which "was not seriously threatened with invasion". Black opines that Canada also was not threatened (p707); "Canada ..... had contributed to the British war effort without ... being under threat". But on the other hand Black believes in US benevolence (p1030); "The Americans had all the power, but would use it only when they themselves were threatened, as in the two world wars and the Cold War to come". This is blatently untrue both then and today. ... Read More:

Michael Collins by Tim Pat Coogan is interesting book dealing with one of modern Ireland's legendary figures. It is a very in-depth book especially when you consider that Michael Collins died in his early thirties and therefore I believe that anybody interested in finding out about this man will not be disappointed. However, it does have some flaws, firstly, the style of writing is at first a little difficult and needs perservering with. Secondly, the use of English when the term British is more appropriate can be annoying and finally, it does fit at times into the usual trend you find in books about revolutionaries who died young that what they did and what they could have achieved can be overplayed. Nevertheless it is a good book about this pivotal figure in modern Irish history. ... Read More:

This book was lent to me by my hitory teacher, for some catchup work and background reading. I found that not only did it give an overview of the whole revolution but also an in depth look at the topic I required(NEP coincidentally). i would definitely give this a read, no matter who you are, although A-level or GCSE students will probably benefit the most, as it is really easy to read.

There is a difference between political philosophy, ideology and day to day politics.

Political philosophy asks question about the nature of democracy, the ideal state and the like. This subject is the most abstract and introduces ideas such as how should citizens be organsed and education (see Plato) or why do we need a sovereign (see Hobbes) or are we entitled to private property (see Locke).

Ideology (which is sometimes a dirty word) tends to refer to braod political ideas such as Conservatism, Liberalism, Socialism and Communism. Ideology tends to form a bridge between political philosophy (and other subjects such as history, economics and sociology) and day to day politics. Whatever they claim, most parties tend to draw on a broad 'ideology' which helps ... Read More:
