This was the first book of Kapuscinski's I ever read(in about 1986)and I've been a huge fan ever since. Not the archetypal war junkie that western media outlets habitually send to Africa,Kapuscinski's humanity and gift for the arresting detail shine out in this book. Two highlights in a fantastic book are:
1-The passage describing roadblock etiquette. How vital it is to know the difference between "camarada"(comrade) and "irmao"(brother).Saying the wrong word at the wrong roadblock means instant death.
2-When he hears a radio broadcast saying that the MPLA are a bunch of communist stooges, lackeys to their Soviet masters, and that any communists would be hunted down.At this point in time,Kapuscinski is,as far as he knows, the only citizen ... Read More:

63.Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by: Doris Kearns Goodwin

Books : Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
This is a super book. The research is out of the top drawer - very impressive indeed. One is left with the vivid images of what it must have been like to be a politican at this time and the sorts of skills required. From that perspective, it was excellent. However, there is so much information and detail that one has to study the book rather than read the book. It stifles the flow of the attractive story as all details that can be tied into the narrative are introduced. I am not sure that I would like to recommend this book as something to read, but as a text for historical research I suspect it will become required reading.

If you want to understand the contemporary world and the forces affecting the paths of history then start here. Negri's intellect is rigorous and first-rate, his depth of insight outstanding. Normally he writes in a very intellectual style, using technical language and thought that is beyond that of the begginner. Here the writing is more disciplined and coherent, but doesn't lose any of its wealth. His use of historical materialism allows him to endows his work with a strong emprical basis which ensures that is statements are factual and to the point and he doesn't make wooly or doubtful assertions. His analysis of capital and its affects on human life is invigorating in its analysis of past events, prescient in its predictions for our present and future ... Read More:

65.Chomsky on Anarchism by: Noam Chomsky

This is not a theoretical book; Chomsky does not see himself as an anarchist thinker but rather as a "fellow traveler" and so this collection of interviews, talks, and essays spaning from the early 1970s to 2004 contains no original theory from the man himself. Chomsky is as accessible as ever however and this book's interviews will give a reader new to anarchist thought a firm idea of what anarchists are against, and what they are for, with further elaboration of Chomsky's own critique of capitalism, state and government, and their alternatives in the essays and talks.

'Cuba: A New History' is an excellent account of Cuban history up until this books publication in 2004. Gott manages to write in a completely engaging way and draws you in to the rich and diverse history of this amazing Caribbean island. This is in no way a dry and uninspiring read, but one that helps you immerse yourself in the history and developments over the years. From Spanish colonial rule, US intervention and soviet support, Cuba has managed to retain some remnant of it's own identity and this book shows this side perfectly. The first 100 pages (looking at Spanish Colonial rule and the slave trades to Cuba) were the hardest to engage with for me, but as soon as the revolution occurred and the book focused on the Castro government and all that it entails, ... A brilliant, and insightful account of one of histories most famous, yet least understood milestones.
Many of the causes of The Revolution were examined, such as the rising cost of bread, the large middle class population that was hurt significantly by the policies of Louis XVI's finance minister, and the early events within the revolution, such as the Royal Family's failed flight to Varennes, and Austria's invasion, that only exacerbated events.
Very little culpability rests with one person, or even group of people. In many ways it was as though a Pandora's box had been opened, and many people were caught in the eye of the storm. There were many tragedies, the September Massacres of prisoners, the king and queen, and many people who were suspected of being ... Read More:

This book is a fantastic way to learn about John Adams and it's a great way to be introduced to excellent historical biographical writing.

McCullough is a brilliant and exciting writer. He truly makes Adams come alive, and when Adams inevitably dies at the end it is decidedly sad.

Adams is a hero of the Republic. First a great friend, then a great rival, then a great friend again of Thomas Jefferson. John Adams is undeservedly overlooked by many students of American History.

Adams the republican vs Jefferson the populist was the great debate in American history and still continues today. Adams saw the horror of the French Revolution for what it was and predicted that it would end in depravity and violence and likely cause a savage reaction ... Read More:

70.Anarchy, State and Utopia by: Robert Nozick

Nozick is the considered the originator of the oxymoronic and totally imaginary 'anarcho capitalist' movement. In practice this is just about the least human, humane and rational school of thought to come out of Enlightenment liberalism. Entirely unworkable and entirely contradictory, the idea that you can have a stateless society yet run things by the market is far more ridiculous than the ideas of actual anarchists like Bakunin and Kropotkin.

Even if all people were born completely equal with exactly the same skills and resources available, as long as the uneven distribution of the market existed then in one generation an elite would form and oppress those who hadn't made it. This is the nature of the market, some win because others lose. Nozick's version, where there ... Read More:
