The author has written a reasonable account of communism. He shows how communism derived from a number of ideas that lie far back in time - many existing well before the French Revolution. He discusses various movements that led to liberalism and socialism - all stemming from the so called Enlightment.

The socialist branches themselves subdivided into several different types of socialism of which communism was one sub-branch and this in itself was divided further since Marxism was initially only one type of communism.

At this stage he gives a brief outline of the some of the main ideas behind Marxism (i.e. 'inverted' Hegelianism, the surplus value theory of economics, historical necessity and so on). This introduction ... Read More:

Michael Collins by Tim Pat Coogan is interesting book dealing with one of modern Ireland's legendary figures. It is a very in-depth book especially when you consider that Michael Collins died in his early thirties and therefore I believe that anybody interested in finding out about this man will not be disappointed. However, it does have some flaws, firstly, the style of writing is at first a little difficult and needs perservering with. Secondly, the use of English when the term British is more appropriate can be annoying and finally, it does fit at times into the usual trend you find in books about revolutionaries who died young that what they did and what they could have achieved can be overplayed. Nevertheless it is a good book about this pivotal figure ... Read More:

A brilliant, and insightful account of one of histories most famous, yet least understood milestones.
Many of the causes of The Revolution were examined, such as the rising cost of bread, the large middle class population that was hurt significantly by the policies of Louis XVI's finance minister, and the early events within the revolution, such as the Royal Family's failed flight to Varennes, and Austria's invasion, that only exacerbated events.
Very little culpability rests with one person, or even group of people. In many ways it was as though a Pandora's box had been opened, and many people were caught in the eye of the storm. There were many tragedies, the September Massacres of prisoners, the king and queen, and many people who were suspected of being insufficiently ... Read More:

Having read several accounts of the experiences of victims sucked into the monstrous machine that was the Soviet GULag, Janusz Bardach's account stands out for its unflinching personal honesty. It is not for the faint-hearted, as Bardach never glosses over the atrocities committed. But he never appears simply as a witness, or victim, since his account is a true autobiography - he also describes the effects his experiences had on his own character.

To the reviewer who felt the narrative 'petered out', I would recommend that they read Bardach's second volume "Surviving Freedom", which brings his personal history up to his emigration to the US. It also gives more detail about Bardach's youth, prior to his Soviet experiences. If you are interested in this remarkable man, rather ... Read More:

I have been following the Irish Troubles for years, and this is one of the very few books written by a British citizen...that takes a hard, critical eye at some of the events that have taken place in Northern Ireland that lesser books and newspaper articles have written up as heroics, but sometimes are little more than highly dubious killings dressed up after the fact as being consistent with the rule of law...I did not see any errors or flaws in logic that made me think that his book was fundamentally flawed. It is a welcome breath of fresh air compared to the various memoirs of SAS men that have come out in the past decade, very few of which entertain even the slightest possibility that the men of the SAS might on occasion do something wrong.

Finally, I met the author back ... Read More:

I can remember at school feeling that history became far too complicated for mortal (and schoolboy minds) when it reached the early to middle of the Victorian era - one could more or less understand (if not necessarily approve of) the expansionist vision of a British globe - but mention things like the Corn laws and the battles between Whigs and Tories and how they transmuted into Liberal and Conservatives, and my eyes would glaze over with confusion and exhaustion.

Having felt the need to rectify this ignorance, I found that the process (through this book) brought both pleasure and insight. History is more than that of merely the stories of 'great men' (or women) - but like Pitt a few years before him, Peel had the most extraordinary impact on Britain and her allies and occasional ... This provides an insight into the mind of a man who has always attracted a division in opinion regarding his character. It represents a man who was willing to fight for his beliefs and his country. However interestingly throughout the book he refers to black people as 'our black people' which makes you wonder at his real views and feelings regarding these people. However an interesting read and definately a must read for all young Zimbabweans 'born-free' who might know very little of our history. Great Book
