This book deserves the hype. You will come away thinking differently about humanity as well as chimpanzees. The book raises as many questions as it answers, but that's a good thing. Frans de Waal's writing brings the analysis alive and in places the account of life for the chimpanzees at Arnhem is immensely moving. However, the real importance of the book lies in its painstaking and pathbreaking analysis of the evolution of social relationships amongst the group over time. The photographs also help and the high production values are justified by, and compliment, the importance of the subject matter. For any reader with an open mind, this book will prove a joy.

97.Africa Works: Disorder as Political Instrument (African Issues) by: Patrick Chabal, Jean-Pascal Daloz
January 21, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Africa Works: Disorder as Political Instrument (African Issues)
A confident, compelling text, Africa Works ambitiously attempts to establish a new paradigm in African political science. Based on neo-Weberian principles, Chabal and Daloz attack much contemporary political analysis as being misguided by false assumptions.

That is, if we are to assume that development can only take place in a Western manner, we will conclude that Africa is failing. This outlook will prevent us from understanding what is really taking place in Africa, and blind us to what they see as a 'African modernity'.

They argue that Africa is modern without being Western, and that to understand the African rationalities, we must detach ourselves from ethnocentric assumptions and use universal Weberian analytical tools ... Read More:

I have studied under Peter Burnell and can safely say that he is one of the finest professors in democratization and development studies. His book deserves no less praise, in particular for its organisation and the level of expertise of its writers. Overall a valuable book for undergraduates and new postgraduates in this field, but certainly lacking a high degree of detail in its contents which a student dedicated to this field might find significant.

I'm not a political animal but I found this book interesting and informative - it answered a lot of questions and explained things in a reader-friendly way. Ideal for the politically ignorant (like me) who feel they ought to join in the Highbrow Conversations going on around them!
