I want to be generous to Paul as I think that he has done a great service to those who are interested in running for the council or Parliament in pulling together into a fairly short book the basics of what they need to know to run a political campaign.

However this book has some weaknesses which purchasers need to be mindful of. Paul is sometimes a little too intellectual in going on about some of the problems of British democracy and therefore wasting the reader's time in GETTING DOWN TO IT. I'm not against intellectualism per se but frankly feel that some of the arguments would be better in another book (Paul the policy wonk gets the better of Paul the pragmatic campaigner).

Frankly the first two chapters could be ignored ... Read More:

Books : Contemporary British Politics
I was so glad when they published the new edition.

I have used this new edition for my A Level course and it has helped me achieve a high A and enabled me to study at Cambridge now. I compared some text books, included Politics UK, British Politics in Focus etc, I found this one most suitable for A Level students. Some argue that British Politics in focus is a bit shallow and will not be able to further essay writings. Politics UK is an excellent text book too but it is said to be to vague. But Politics UK is certainly more suitable for degree students.

I used this book together with articles from Politics Review and Talking Politics. I think they combine well and I would strong recommend this book to those who want the right ... Read More:

This book was among the essential readings for my course of World History, and frankly I found the chapter about Iran the part worth reading(Khomeini's reign of terror etc) still the author's basic thesis is a flawed one when it comes to the question whether Islam and democracy are incompatible, as he spuriously argues that democracy is possible only with secularism. The ironic thing is that while he says Islamism is a form of nationalism(which of course just like any other form of nationalism is constructed through what have been selected, written, pictured, popularized and repressed by its architects i.e. Mawdudi, Khomeini and Qutb) the issue is that when he speaks about the supposed incompatibility of Islam and democracy, he tends to forget that just ...
