In many ways a textbook setting out the basic history and distinctions of order, states, systems, values, diplomacy, war and the like. This rigorous laying out of definitions and altering conceptions sometimes leads to insights but more often functions to set the starting coordinates for other work and other thought. Valuable for its insistence that order should not trump justice, but rather side-stepping this by not studying justice in itself or trying to negotiate the tensions between them beyond an attempt to 'objectively' set out the issues. Nor does this adequately address, never mind properly describe, realism and idealism as alternative schools. Bull admits that The Anarchical Society is an implicit defence of the states system, which ... Read More:

A book which doesn't take a party political view, but does take faith seriously in the realm of politics! I read it all very quickly and enjoyed it, and found it exceptionally thought porvoking, has stayed with me for the last few months. Read and be challenged.

46.AS UK Government and Politics by: Mark Garnett, Phil Lynch

Books : AS UK Government and Politics
The second edition provides an up-date to a valuable AS Government & Politics text. Students find this book relatively easy to read with a good use of colour photos and charts. At the end of each chapter is a useful exam focus. The book also dovetails with the major examination boards for AS Government & Politics.

When I established a new AQA UK Politics online syllabus for my students I made this textbook the cornerstone for their reading. The outcome was some excellent examination results. Highly recommended.

Pages 1 to 428 of this paperback book consist of a number of quotations relating to politics taken from politicians, classic writers, journalists, playwrights, philosophers and so on. This is arranged on an alphabetic basis. Pages 429-541 consist of a keyword index.

For example, if I was looking for quotation involving he word 'prayer', I turn to the keyword index and find that there are three listed.

One of these entries is "one prayer absorbs all others" GLAD 159:6.

I then turn to page 159 to find Gladstone's quotation:

This gives:

"one prayer absorbs all others: Ireland, Ireland, Ireland." Diary 10 April 1887.

Alternatively, I can look up the names of famous people and see if there ... Read More:

I completely agree with the sentiments already expressed, I found this to be really a good book on the European Union. I would recommend this as it gives you a solid base of understanding of what has gone on, is going on and will continue to go on in the EU. The history, the policies, the institutions, the theories and contemporary debates are all addressed, for the most part in a very clear and concise manner.

As a European Studies undergraduate I have found this to have been an invaluable resource in my second year of study especially. However, I will issue a caveat in my praise, in saying that if you are interested in very specific issues, I would suggest that you find other books that deal with them in greater detail. For this is a more general book, ... Read More:

50.Crap: A Guide to Politics by: Terry Arthur

Terry Arthur seems to have improved on his earlier book, 95% Is Crap. This time - and I agree - he seems to think that politics is now ALL crap. He does it in such a way that you just have to laugh at the absurdities and inanities that our politicians come out with, and the way that their polices invariably have the opposite effect of what they intended. This is great stuff. You have to laugh or you'd cry...
