101.No Comebacks by: Frederick Forsyth

Books : No Comebacks
Being a fan of the great Roald Dahl, I love stories with twists in the tail. I bought this book to take with me on holiday and really enjoyed Forsyth's stories immensely.

The only criticism is that for the majority of them I could `see' how the twist would develop while only half way through them. Not quite as unexpected as Dahl's stories, but a good book all the same.

Books : Atonement
Ok I am a big Ian McEwen fan, but whilst I may be bias I rate this as one of the top ten book written by a British author in the last twenty years.

The story is one of family conflict and deceit. The story delves into the lives of a family and close friends who one evening are bought together when a incident occurs which is covered up. Someone has to shoulder the blame and the story revolves around the consequences of the cover up and the wrongful accusation of a young family friend and how that affects not just his life but those of the family.

The story spans a period of 60 years or so but the plot entwines through the years, to climax at the very end.

I was shocked by some of the prose, especially ... Read More:

I am never certain of the place of Iris Murdoch's writing in the pantheon of world literature but she must be considered by any standards a major novelist. If you are familiar with her works then it is unlikely that you will read this review but instead will just go out and buy the book and enjoy it. It is one of her best. If you are not familiar with them then I am able to give an overview of the recurrent themes which make them so absorbing, while not wishing to give the impression that they are in any way formulaic.
Most of her novels revolve around a small clique of upper-middle class academics who in the past have attended Oxbridge together. They are interconnected by a complicated but self-contained network of love affairs, both open and clandestine. ... Read More:

106.The Stars' Tennis Balls by: Stephen Fry
September 28, 2000
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Stars' Tennis Balls
Don't read this book expecting a rip-roaring, side-splitting romp that you might expect of a man possessing Stephen Fry's ability (as demonstrated in his other fictional works). Do, however, expect some excellent use of language and some well placed wit. If you are expecting a straight forward comedy, then please don't denigrate the book for not being so - it isn't supposed to be, so holding that against it is much like complaining that a car doesn't float...

This book is an interesting read, and one that is difficult (though I will admit not wholly impossible) to put down. The story itself is far-fetched, but this is supposed to be some escapist fiction. The book also manages to ponder the driving factors behind the characters without grinding itself in a psychological ... Read More:

In today's climate of doublespeak this witty and deeply satirical clubbing of Nixon and the American right is partcularly apposite in the light of the current Hutton Enquiry.

Fabulously enjoyable the book also leaves you with an uneasy feeling and a nasty taste in your mouth for the crimes that Nixon committed in his pursuit of power.

Books : My French Kitchen: A Book of 120 Treasured Recipes
I was disappointed to find that this is not a new book, but is just the USA edition of Harris's first recipe book "The French Kitchen: A Cookbook".
I prefer the UK edition as it does not use "cups" for everything!
