Just finished reading it... While I have doubts about the (invisible) transformation Lucy experiences at the very end of the book, this is still one of the better written tragedies of the last few decades. Lucy Nelson/Bassart is horribly, fascinatingly real, convincing on almost every page, and Roth's usual unflinching approach to the thoughts of his characters was first demonstrated here, in his third book.

There isn't much of the stylistic flare here that we see in Roth's later books, but it's well-written and compulsive reading, as Lucy is such a compelling character, in spite of the reader learning early on what ultimately became of her. As the last reviewer noted, she is an unusually vibrant, real character, and if I ... Read More:

Bought this book having been very impressed with Awaydays, and if anything Kevin Sampsons writing is improving, i found awaydays a deeper book in some ways, but this is more interesting, as there is a lot going on under the surface. There are a lot of different ideas and areas being explored within this fairly simple intertwined narrative.
I think Sampsons writing is tight and lends very well to his characters, he has half a dozen excellent main characters here who turn out to be very complex in their own ways.
The Shaun and pastie characters are excellent, you cant help but root for them.
A much bigger package than id expected, read in one sitting

134.Wilt in Nowhere by: Tom Sharpe

Having read Tom Sharpe over a number of years, I have always thoroughly enjoyed his writing and ascerbic wit. Unfortunately, this one falls far short of what has gone before. It is disjointed and simply not very funny overall.

... so many people really rate this book. A thousand odd pages of stories tenuously linked by family bloodlines through the years. Nice idea, some interesting history but the stories are really quite bland and weak; probably because it is difficult to write about a region and its surroundings which basically is not that interesting.I gave up on this and the book has found its way to the charity shop. A very over rated book.

I think this is a pretty good book to the people age about 30 years old or older. But not for the high school student yet. Because they can't feel when they said for the family was very importance to them. I think when they get older they may can feeling it. And the marriage women may like it, because the storys character they are mostly is marriage women, a lot the time it sounds like the story is talking about them.

What a great book. I read it in less than two days and the story and the characters stayed with me for a long time. I have only started to read Roth's books this year and this one has been the best one so far. Alvin Peppler, Zuckerman's nemesis, is such a great character and he is one of the reasons why this book got me hooked. The story itself is great as it tells what happens to a writer once he becomes too famous. I recomend it to all lovers of great literature. Going to buy another Philip Roth book now.

So far, this is my favourite book in the Richard Bolitho series. In it, his friendship with Thomas Herrisk is tested to the limit, but not found wanting. It also sees Bolitho taught a lesson in not always accepted others at face value. Exploring all of the frustrations and hardships of the navy at war and those brave souls that kept our ships alive and fighting. An excellent adventure which, I hope, others will enjoy as much as I did. Happy reading!

140.The Alchemist by: Paulo Coelho

Books : The Alchemist
This book is my favourite of all Paulo Coelho's books, a masterful and easily readable use of the story telling tradition providing pointers for all of us in our personal development journey. Rich in metaphors, language and events, a stirring adventure story full of rich learning about staying true to yourself and your vision.
