Books : Blessings
What a surprise this book turned out to be. I had not heard of the author before but would recommend it highly The descriptions of places and people paint pictures for the reader and it was a very enjoyable read which was both sad and funny. I am looking forward to reading anything else by this author.

Books : The Heart of Danger
This is a superb read. I got completely gripped by it.
Gritty, sometimes disturbing, often moving.....but always gripping, like its dragging you by the arm through the war torn Balkans.
A real eye opener to the kind of horrors that took place underneath our very noses.
Buy it. I challenge you not to be moved by this book.

Books : Norwegian Wood (Vintage East)
I read one Murakami book a few years back, couldn't make head nor tail of it, and forgot about him. Then I picked this up in a charity shop and was intrigued and then totally immersed as I read it in a couple of days. The variety of the responses here is interesting too.

At heart, the plot is very simple: teenager falls in love with his best friend's girl, but the relationship is stuck. Enter a second girl, who he also loves. Add lots and lots of one night stands with anonymous other girls, and there you have it. It's set in the late 60s but the period doesn't really come through; adding a few Beatles songs does not make it a novel about the 60s.

Sure, the lead character's detachment is unsettling, and the two girl friends ... Read More:

146.The Stars' Tennis Balls by: Stephen Fry

Books : The Stars' Tennis Balls
Don't read this book expecting a rip-roaring, side-splitting romp that you might expect of a man possessing Stephen Fry's ability (as demonstrated in his other fictional works). Do, however, expect some excellent use of language and some well placed wit. If you are expecting a straight forward comedy, then please don't denigrate the book for not being so - it isn't supposed to be, so holding that against it is much like complaining that a car doesn't float...

This book is an interesting read, and one that is difficult (though I will admit not wholly impossible) to put down. The story itself is far-fetched, but this is supposed to be some escapist fiction. The book also manages to ponder the driving factors behind the characters without grinding ... Read More:

although the book claims to follow on from Kane and Abel and The Prodigal Daughter there is very little about the character of Florentyna Kane, so if you're looking to continue the saga you may be disappointed. That aside the book is excellent one that you just cannot put down, you have to keep turning the pages to find out if the agent succeeds in saving the president.

148.Killing Ground by: Gerald Seymour

Books : Killing Ground
This book contains a lot of detail that I have found lacking in many books about the performance of both the BEF and its Senior officers throughout the conflict.
I would class it as a 'must read' but with one reservation - the book comes across as having a central theme and that is that Haig and his staff were not up to the job and this book is setting out to prove it.
While personally I do not judge any of the fighting on the western front to have been 'well fought and well planned' and do not apply this to just the BEF - the two most successful offensives in the West were both German (Initial invasion in 1914 and then the Michael offensives in 1918) neither achieved their objectives either and ultimately cost Germany the war.

I was disappointed to find that this is not a new book, but is just the USA edition of Harris's first recipe book "The French Kitchen: A Cookbook".
I prefer the UK edition as it does not use "cups" for everything!

150.Ghost Force by: Patrick Robinson

Books : Ghost Force
Previous books have worked well but like other reviewers almost stopped reading.
The Britsih are stiff upper lip fools,The Argetinians great tactically. The Russions are there just for fun and the Americans are clever and smart and can solve all problems with a little Special Force.
The book gets so many views wrong....
The Falklands will never ever be forgotton by the British and in a modern World with the Internet.Newspapaers TV the original premise to could not occur.
The biggest problem is the fact the British in this situation would do what we always do and that is to use Cunning and deceptiion to regain the Falklands not some silly Naval mission. How about Cruise Missiles up the Presidents Residence

Falkland islanderes are ... Read More:
