151.The Dogs of War by: Frederick Forsyth
September 16, 1974
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Dogs of War
The thing about Frederick Forsyth is the research that he goes into whether it be the arms trade, the mercenary business, or precious metals as is the case in this book. His stuff has a stamp of authority about it. The trouble here is that, unlike say Jackal, the tension of the story is lost under a wealth of material to do with weapons and financial matters, all genuine info I am sure but what about the action? It takes till page 393 out of 439 total pages of the paperback for the invasion to start and it's over pretty quick. We have no scene with the evil dictator Jean Kimba who deserves a good kicking I'm sure many will agree! It's all wrapped up rather sketchily. It's a poor effort at story-telling but most informative about Swiss banking!

Books : The Cement Garden (Vintage Blue)
Ian McEwan is a wonderfully gifted writer and in this, his first novel, he displays his talent. He tells the story of a group of dysfuntional children surviving after the death of their parents. He certainly gets inside the head of Jack, the 15 year old protagonist, with all his doubts, selfishness and youthful insecurities. The writing is very skillful but it is never inspiring, entertaining or enjoyable. It is depressing, sinister and morbid. Although this book is well written I much preferred his other novels such as Atonement or Saturday.

Books : Portnoy's Complaint (Vintage Blue)
Alexander Portnoy is thirty three, reluctantly Jewish and confessing his life to his psychoanalyst, from being a five-year-old mother's boy, through formative years as a gifted student to his current status as New York's Assistant Commissioner of Human Opportunity.

Alex's is a life overshadowed by the memories of his parents smothering him with their expectations and cloying Jewish heritage. Poppa Jack is a modestly successful insurance salesman, but because he is the only Jew in the branch he gets the worst clientele and has to work doubly hard for his return. Momma Sophie wants to be just enough of a cut above her contemporaries for it to be noticeable, whilst she runs their home as the archetypal Jewish mother. Alex's early recollections capture ... 158.Girl at the Lion D'or by: Sebastian Faulks

Books : Girl at the Lion D'or
This seemed slow to get going and I wasn't sure about it until just over half way through when Anne explained to Charles what happened to her father. This is a novel about the direct and indirect effects of the First World War on various members of French society as they move with fatalistic resignation towards the Second World War. It is also a love story built upon the successful evocation of an atmosphere of sexual tension with which readers of Birdsong will be familiar. It is not as good as that classic, but worth reading. 4/5 for the last 100 pages.
