161.Ghost Force by: Patrick Robinson

Books : Ghost Force
Previous books have worked well but like other reviewers almost stopped reading.
The Britsih are stiff upper lip fools,The Argetinians great tactically. The Russions are there just for fun and the Americans are clever and smart and can solve all problems with a little Special Force.
The book gets so many views wrong....
The Falklands will never ever be forgotton by the British and in a modern World with the Internet.Newspapaers TV the original premise to could not occur.
The biggest problem is the fact the British in this situation would do what we always do and that is to use Cunning and deceptiion to regain the Falklands not some silly Naval mission. How about Cruise Missiles up the Presidents Residence

162.Enduring Love by: Ian McEwan

Books : Enduring Love
There's absolutely no denying Ian McEwan has an incredible writing ability, if you've read Atonement you'll know this all too well! The way in which he makes you engage with the characters is incredible, you really really know how they feel. The only downside I'd say is that the story is a bit bizarre - no plot spoilers but - it wasn't the most believable idea for a plot.
If you like his writing style then I'd say definitely buy this book, but if you're more into a really good story then its a bit farfetched..

I hadn't heard of Ha Jin before reading In The Pond (whose title still baffles me even after having finished it) but I was immediately drawn to his uncomplicated, playful style. Although there are numerous comparisons on this site with Animal Farm, that may be misleading - this is less sinister and less allegorical, though both do effectively evince the strangulating hold of Communist authorities over the individual. The story is essentially about the efforts of factory worker Shao Bin to denigrate the factory bosses after they overlook him when some new apartments are made available to employees. They consider Bin an unhinged troublemaker, but as he starts to show the same imaginative streak in his protests as he does in his excellent artwork, the power struggle becomes ... Read More:

164.High Tide in Tucson: Essays from Now or Never by: Barbara Kingsolver
1995-10
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : High Tide in Tucson: Essays from Now or Never
Kingsolver holds reign neck and neck with Annie Dillard as two of my favorite naturalist writers and essayists. Kingsolver holds her own as a novelist. In this collection of essays, rewritten and expanded versions, in many cases, from what has been previously published in various magazines, Kingsolver's skill and talent as an essayist shimmers with brilliance and sheer entertainment. Even when she is teaching us a lesson and hammering it home.

Topics have wide range, covering nature, art, values and ethics, human nature and its foibles, politics, and travels. Whether she is pondering the biological clocks of hermit crabs or espousing her views on violence and objectification of women on the silver screen, or taking the reader along on the harsh realities of a not ... Originally written in draft form around the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989, Ha Jin's novel recreates those tumultuous times and the forces which built up and exploded in student protest--the stifling of true inquiry and creativity, institutionalized adherence to old-style, hard line bureaucracy, and an all-powerful state which manipulates every aspect of a person's destiny, from education and career path to place of residency and choice of spouse. With candor and a sense of immediacy, Ha Jin illuminates the pressures and frustrations of Chinese academic life, as seen by Jian Wan, studying for his Ph.D. entrance exams in literature, and by Prof. Yang, his mentor and academic advisor.

When Prof. Yang, who is also Jian Wan's future father-in ... Read More:

167.The Tattooed Girl by: Joyce Carol Oates
2004-06
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Tattooed Girl
This book became more gripping the further into it I read. It describes the awkward 'relationship' between a Jewish author, Joshua Seigl and his new assistant Alma, who just happens to detest Jews.

Alma is a woman who has been abused continuously for most of her life, by various men, in various ways. During one of these abuses, several men drugged her and placed various red tattoos on her face and body, and it's this that the title alludes to.

Much of this story concerns Alma and Joshua's silent thoughts about each other, and it is in these passages that Joyce Carol Oates excels at keeping the reader's interest, be it through humour, honesty, or just the admirable feat of getting right to the crux of human attitudes and emotions towards various issues. Sexuality, ... Read More:

This book is a fantastic read that starts toward the end of World War 2 and covers generations.
The tale tells of a young Greek girl and an eccentric Italian Captain finding love during the Italian "occupation" of the Greek island of Cephallonia, although the Italian army hardly treats it as such due to disenchantment with having to fight for reasons & ideals they do not share with their leaders.
The author creates extremely tangible scenes, people & feelings that you're left feeling like you really knew the characters & places.
There are a few strange plot-holes but this in no way detracts from the overall story and I was actually quite gutted that it had to end!
A really good read that everyone will enjoy & appreciate I think.

169.American Pastoral by: Philip Roth

Other reviewers, even ones who got the fundamental point that this book is simply boring, still seem to say absurd things like how great the writing is and how complicated and intense the prose is and so on...

That this book is dull and tepid is clear. But what I wish to point out is how poorly written it is. We are bashed over the head again and again with exact and clear descriptions of the emotional, moral, spiritual and historical import of what is happening. Characters experience things in complete clarity and tell us all about it. Young children have the most amazing insight into what they experience and what it signifies. Pure tripe.

Roth makes the most elementary mistakes as an author, even as basic as constantly telling rather than showing. His prose is unexciting and ... Read More:
