Books : Sleeping with Cats: A Memoir
Marge Piercy had a tough, working-class upbringing in Detroit in the fifties, and got involved in politics via the US anti-war movement of the sixties. Later she moved on to the New Left and to feminism. Her life mixes activism and writing, and gives the lie to anyone who thinks seventies feminism was puritanical and joyless. Piercy consistently resists anyone who tells her how she ought to think, look or behave, whether they're right wing or left wing, and has an infectious pleasure in the details of everyday life: animals, plants, food, sex. Fascinating if you enjoy her writing, or even if you haven't come across it.

174.Eleven Minutes by: Paulo Coelho

This must be a contender for the worst book I've ever read. I read 'The Alchemist' by the same author largely because it appeared in the 'BBC 100 favourite reads' poll and was described as 'life changing'. I didn't like it, but thought this may just be due to the fact that the story is a cross between a parable and a self-help book, and decided to give Coelho another go. I shouldn't have bothered!
The story here is of a naive young Brazilian girl wanting to make some money by travelling to Switzerland ostensibly as a dancer, but soon becomes involved in prostitution. It's full of unbelievable scenarios and characters, some of which are frankly risible, mixed with a generous dose of half-baked adolescent philosophy. The heroine moves ... Read More:

175.High Tide in Tucson: Essays from Now or Never by: Barbara Kingsolver
1995-10

Books : High Tide in Tucson: Essays from Now or Never
Kingsolver holds reign neck and neck with Annie Dillard as two of my favorite naturalist writers and essayists. Kingsolver holds her own as a novelist. In this collection of essays, rewritten and expanded versions, in many cases, from what has been previously published in various magazines, Kingsolver's skill and talent as an essayist shimmers with brilliance and sheer entertainment. Even when she is teaching us a lesson and hammering it home.

Topics have wide range, covering nature, art, values and ethics, human nature and its foibles, politics, and travels. Whether she is pondering the biological clocks of hermit crabs or espousing her views on violence and objectification of women on the silver screen, or taking the reader along on the harsh ... 177.The Bean Trees: A Novel by: Barbara Kingsolver

Books : The Bean Trees: A Novel
It's taken me a long time to discover Barbara Kingsolver, but I'm glad I did. 'The Bean Trees', her first novel, is flawless and deeply enjoyable. It's a story of women surviving loss - self-effacing Lou-Ann, whose husband has dumped her; the car-mechanic widow, Mattie; blind Miss Poppy; and, most affectingly, Guatemalan refugee Esperanza, whose daughter was taken from her - all brought to life by Taylor Greer, one of the most genuine and likeable narrators you'll ever meet. Male characters are marginal, with one exception: Esperanza's husband, Estevan. Beautifully drawn, and an admirable person, he's an example of the inclusivity of Kingsolver's writing: she might be more focused on the lives of women, but she's never dismissive or contemptuous, except of society ... Books : The Gravedigger's Daughter
Whilst I found this book gripping, I felt there were some aspects that weren't finished. For instance -- did Rebecca aka Hazel Jones ever tell her husband who she really was? And what about Rebecca's relationship with her son? I felt I was just left hanging there with a disappointing ending.

Very interesting read. Spike Milligan is a perfect spokesperson for the bipolar suffers. This book is illuminated by his contribution, delving into the rich life he has led. I can say I found this book both informative and touching.

I just finished reading "Pigs in Heaven" by Barbara Kinsolver. I didn't read the prequel to it, but I have to say that this book even by itself was a wonderful book. I really enjoyed it. It was a touching story that left you beging for more at the end.
