One thing you can rely on with Mr McEwan is that you get something different every time. It's hard to believe this book is by the same person who wrote A Child in Time, Black Dogs and - especially - Atonement.

The claustrophobic atmosphere of a filthy house in the middle of an unbearably hot summer is almost tangible throughout this book. Sometimes I could feel the sticky kitchen floor and smell the rotten food in the fridge. And as for our three key players, the children of this revolting home, they are the most unlikeable, weird bunch you could imagine. A little bit Lord of the Flies, a little bit Wasp Factory, this is not a chocolate box image of childhood, but a relentless dig at the underbelly of a very, very dysfunctional ... Read More:

A thoroughly thought provoking read. Every aspect was a joy; from his endless fountain of wit to his dark ideas of what life could have been.

Making History changed my life, by far the best book I've ever read.

In the Dark Deborah Moggach has long been one of the best writers in English, and under-appreciated, but this is her best book to date. Many authors have described WW1 profiteers, but none ever managed to give them so much as a vestige of humanity. Moggach achieves this by first showing us the woman who will fall in love with profiteer Turk. She shows us the woman's despair, and how she needs to be rescued. Result: we fear troubles arriving for Turk because of what they will do to Eithne. A brilliant strategy by a master writer.

As for Eithne's priggish son, Ralph, we see him skewered on a butterfly collector's needle.

If you already know Moggach's work, this will surpass your expectations. If you don't -- what a treat you have ... Read More:

The Booker lost all credibility when it was awarded to this drivel; I can only imagine that the panel either consisted entirely of McEwan's literary pals or else that it was some kind of belated attempt to...er...atone for the passing over of the brilliant Atonement a few years earlier.

Both decisions are incomprehensible.

I have to say I found the tale gripping and I like reading McEwan's books as the style of writing make a change for me. But, and it is a biggish 'but' I cannot get over the stupidity and naivety of Colin and Mary - no one forced them into visiting Robert and Caroline's apartment for a second time, but visit they did with disastrous consequences. You'd think they would have enough warnings not to after the first time. Like a previous reviewer mentioning the fact that the couple could not find a restaurant in the evening, credibility is stretched.

Well, to all those that didn't like this novel, and feel the need to attack it - guess what, it's literature, not everyone's going to like it. Criticism is fair enough, but some of the reviews are just childish and boring.

I found this to be a truly disturbing read - the opening incident is truly harrowing, and the aftermath is what leads the ptotagonist, Stephen, into a story of touching sensitivity; an exploration of loss and what it is to need to be found.

What I found interesting is that there was always something at stake for the characters in this novel, always something to be gained or lost, which really heightens the drama. It had a beautifully constructed narrative arc, and the ending for me was spot-on.

Not my favourite McEwan ... Read More:

The authorship is superb, the only fault being 150 pages 3/5s into the book where the endless nuances of hermetic, conspiratorial history do become a little tiresome and could be seriousy edited without anything being lost from the book. I'm confident in saying this because the characters are making this history up. That's the story, they are creating a false conspiracy, and Eco includes every subtle detail and nuance of the history and scholarship that goes into their work, which is a mite unnecessary.

Apart from that, I would highly recommend the book. The plotting is astounding, the characters sympathetic and the story ultimately interesting. One has to realise that Eco is playing a game with this novel, and to a certain extent it works as a satire to such conspiratorial ... Read More:

Palahniuk goes a long way to drive home a simple point. The point being that we don't need fictional monsters to scare us; Frankenstein, Dracula, Bloody Mary... they all pale in comparison to what you and I are capable of. This is the premise he sets early on, and then he proceeds to drive home his point with one disturbing story after another.

And while most of the stories were well executed, I couldn't help feeling manipulated. Like Palahniuk was so intent on driving home his point that he abandoned all sense of finesse in favor of blunt force trauma. Gone was the tightly controlled, sophisticated rage of his past work, and in its place was a kind of unleashed, unfocused fury.

That said, I'd still recommend this offering to those with a strong constitution. It's ... Read More:

This book is written on so many levels that it keeps the reader's attention throughout.
This was my first novel by this author, it was recommended to me by a colleague at work; I am forever greatful.
It has opended my eyes to a way of writing that has provided an escape that turns and takes the reader on a journey they will never forget.
I can't wait to read more titles and I had never known about.

A literary ghost story which explores issues of slavery, family, love and death, 'Beloved' is a book that stays with you long after it's finished. The writing is intricate and beautiful, full of emotion yet always controlled.

Sethe, a freed former slave, and her daughter live in a house haunted by the spirit of her other daughter, Beloved, who died 18 years ago. When a old friend arrives at the house and asserts his authority, Beloved fights back. It might sound far fetched but it is actually one of the most plausible tales of the supernatural I have read. Morrison blends the fantastical and the normal together effortlessly in flowing, readable prose.

It's not always an easy read, particularly in the first couple of chapters whilst the reader adjusts to the style. But once ... Read More:
