241.Further Tales of the City by: Armistead Maupin
1982-07
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Further Tales of the City
Further tales of the City jumps forward a few years from More Tales of the City, but most of our favourite characters are still there; the residents of 28 Barbary Lane; Anna Madrigal's children. The improbable events and unlikely coincidences continue with unabated abandon, but this is part of the charm of the stories. But what holds the book together is the skilful way that Maupin involves all the regular characters in the main plot; and main plot there certainly is (with a Jonestown connection), a plot which keeps one guessing to the end.
It's every bit as good as and possibly even funnier than its predecessors; highly recommended.

243.The Third Child (Piercy, Marge) by: Marge Piercy
2003-12

Books : The Third Child (Piercy, Marge)
I have never read a Marge Piercy book before, and not really a great lover of politically themed books. Consequently I had no pre-conceived ideas about how this book would be, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It really is a page-turner. It has a good story which keeps you guessing throughout, with lots of little surprises. It's a great book to curl up with on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The political theme is what the story is based around, but don't let this put you off. It merely is the backdrop for a really good story.

I guess I made a bad choice - I have not read anything by this author before. The book was good enough to finish (just), but not good enough to make me want to read another one. Surprising, given all the plaudits she gets. Perhaps the emperor has no clothes?

Well crafted in the technical sense, yes, but I didn't see much else to the book. The humour was insufficient to keep me amused and I could not identify at all with the damaged central character. The chaotic background of a Carribean island in political turmoil was well enough done - but that's nothing new.

248.The Witch of Portobello by: Paulo Coelho

Books : The Witch of Portobello
As someone who has enjoyed Coehlo's other works, I had high hopes for this book. I read half-way through however, and by this point I was still waiting for the book to 'start'. It tells a story from different perspectives, a cliched tactic, but there was one problem: There was no story. There is a vague mumbo-jumbo tale of Sherine Khalil, but it seems to make little sense, and is of no excitement and importance.

It makes a cliched attack on religion, and shows a staggering level of ignorance about religion in the UK. For example, in the book a woman who names herself 'Athena' is 'persecuted' by the church in England (This is set in the 1990s) yet in reality any New Age dancing and chanting in this country is highly unlikely to receive ... 250.Animal, Vegetable, Miracle LP by: Barbara Kingsolver, Camille Kingsolver

Books : Animal, Vegetable, Miracle LP
A few other reviews have drawn attention to Barbara Kingsolver's "smugness", including one person who liked the book but doesn't want her round for dinner.

I'm usually really sensitive to people being a bit too pleased with themselves, but I didn't think this book was like that at all. I thought it was touchingly hilarious about the weeks that they ended up just bottling tomatoes for days on end. And I loved all the information about intensive farming, agribusiness seed companies, and terminator genes - like a good article in the Sunday paper.

Most of all I found the book really inspiring. It made me pay attention to where my food came from, much more than I already did. I have always tried to eat seasonally and avoided food imports, ... Read More:
