Books : The Golden One
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes ... 276.The Odessa File by: Frederick Forsyth
1998-06

Books : The Odessa File
We are told that the best stories com from people that write about what they know. So if this story seems insightful it may be because Frederic Forsyth worked for Reuters reporting from London and he wrote the story in hotels from Germany to Austria. He mixes the real, not so real and the plausible to make you think "what if."
I do not want to say much as the fun is being surprised during the reading. However compared to the movie the book is much more in-depth with more characters and details. Manny times you think Forsyth is going off on some tangent and not focusing on the main story; then with out warning the information makes sense later on. One example to look for is the quick encounter with military maneuvers where he describes the tank sergeant. ... Read More:

277.Continent by: Jim Crace
1988-04
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Continent
Prior to the first of the stories in this book there is a quote. It is from The Histories of Pycletius, and it makes a statement upon 4 topics that are each comprised of 7 parts. Author Jim Crace adds his collection of stories, which are 7 in number, to bring the confines of a pentagon of like numbers to a close. While this is only the second time I have had the pleasure of reading this man's work, I can safely say that every word of his writing is carefully chosen. Whether this book grew from the quote, or was merely a pleasant coincidence, only the Author knows. I doubt it was chance. I think it is another demonstration of the unique writing this man shares with readers.

An imagined 7th continent is revealed in 7 stories. This imagined land might ... Read More:

279.The Poisonwood Bible by: Barbara Kingsolver

Books : The Poisonwood Bible
What a magnificent piece of insight into very different minds. The over-sealous father, the not-present mother, and the very strong-minded, but different sisters. I have seldom had a better time reading, many times just revelling in the genious of Kingsolver's attention to details. The small spelling errors that occur when the girls use big words which they don't really understand and so on. The attention to detail is brilliant, but what makes this book great is the sad, but believable story and the magnificent depiction of the different thoughts of the family members. So different are they that I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they were from different planets.

Anyway, in the end it is Kingsolver's great writing skills that makes this a most entertaining and learning ... Read More:

280.The Third Child (Piercy, Marge) by: Marge Piercy
2003-12
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Third Child (Piercy, Marge)
I have never read a Marge Piercy book before, and not really a great lover of politically themed books. Consequently I had no pre-conceived ideas about how this book would be, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It really is a page-turner. It has a good story which keeps you guessing throughout, with lots of little surprises. It's a great book to curl up with on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The political theme is what the story is based around, but don't let this put you off. It merely is the backdrop for a really good story.
