For all that I have a history degree and have studied various periods and aspects of history quite extensively, I have always struggled to get a clear understanding of which Irish hero or villain did what. Whom exactly was Cromwell fighting against when he paid his historic visit in the early 1650s? What was Wolfe Tone, a man now honoured by a statue at one corner of St Stephens Green, actually fighting for? Which of the many battles were sectarian, which for the whole of Ireland? Etc.

A friend recommended Rutherfurd's Ireland Awakening, and I am writing this review to say that his recommendation was spot on. As soon as I had finished reading the book I passed it on to my wife. She went further than me, in that as soon as she had ... Read More:

The authorship is superb, the only fault being 150 pages 3/5s into the book where the endless nuances of hermetic, conspiratorial history do become a little tiresome and could be seriousy edited without anything being lost from the book. I'm confident in saying this because the characters are making this history up. That's the story, they are creating a false conspiracy, and Eco includes every subtle detail and nuance of the history and scholarship that goes into their work, which is a mite unnecessary.

Apart from that, I would highly recommend the book. The plotting is astounding, the characters sympathetic and the story ultimately interesting. One has to realise that Eco is playing a game with this novel, and to a certain extent it ... Read More:

Filled with striking imagery which makes up for the sometimes fragmented narrative. A sad tale which for me evoked a time and a place vividly. Perhaps a little overly 'literary' in places, I thought this was worth reading.

The novel takes the form of a diary written by former art-student, Misty, as she makes some horrible revelations about her husband and the community in which she lives. Unfortunately it is difficult to imagine someone actually writing a diary in the minimalistic, repititive style of Palahniuk. The story becomes increasingly unbelievable, and I'm afraid the ending does not make the novel make more sense (quite the opposite) unlike the ending in the film 'Fight Club'.

I haven't read much horror, perhaps the genre requires the reader to dispell his or her disbelief more than I was able to. Why does Misty mention facts about (real) artists constantly, while not mentioning any facts about the fictional artists central to the novel? Is there no local history ... Read More:

This is basically a love story set in the dark days of WWI, when soldiers are returning home unable to speak of the horrors that they have witnessed. As usual Deborah Moggach manages to explore the alternative facets of the time she is writing about, and that is what makes this such an enthralling read.

The lives of the lodgers, the maid, who seems little more than a slave, but grateful to have a position, and Eithne and her son, who run the boarding house, are all portrayed in their grim reality; and then Neville arrives. Eithne is blind to everything but the excitement he brings into her life. But...carry on reading as of course there is more to most of the characters than meets the eye.

This is another excellent book from Deborah Moggach, although I did find ... Read More:

This book is written on so many levels that it keeps the reader's attention throughout.
This was my first novel by this author, it was recommended to me by a colleague at work; I am forever greatful.
It has opended my eyes to a way of writing that has provided an escape that turns and takes the reader on a journey they will never forget.
I can't wait to read more titles and I had never known about.

well written, but felt like some kind of writing exercise: soulless and unengaging. Interesting in as much as it gives a feel for the way 'big history' fits in with personal history, but you end up not caring about the characters and their outcomes.

28.I Married a Communist by: Philip Roth

Roth is an outstanding prose writer, and "I married a Communist" shows him at his best. Illustrating the conflicts of McCarthy-era American through the tale of pugnacious Communist Ira Ringold, Roth creates a panoply of interesting characters set in a powerful narrative with a slow-building, satisfying storyline.

One reservation: Roth is occasionally carried away by his own writing skill. Result: his otherwise excellent dialogue sometimes goes on at excessive length: the book would be more readable edited down by 30 pages.

Conclusion: excellent heavyweight literary fiction with a few dull patches.

I began reading We with some trepidation. From what I had heard of the book, I was expecting a rather clumsy, dusty work with limited characterisation and a plot which simply supported some of the author's more politically charged ideas.
I was pleasantly surprised. The plot is genuinely exciting and drives the short novel on to its conclusion. The confusion of the narrative character's ideology is wonderfully rendered. The quality of the prose - certainly this novel's finest feature - is a delight to read. Zamyatin mimics the icy, transparent and glassy landscape of his imaginary city with precise and frosty language.
This is certainly the edition to look out for. As she explains in her introduction, Randall (the translator of this new edition) firmly feels the importance of creating a prose structure ... Read More:

Passionate, uninhibited and hilarious - this is vintage Philip Roth. A shameless celebration of getting on and loving it.
