A literary ghost story which explores issues of slavery, family, love and death, 'Beloved' is a book that stays with you long after it's finished. The writing is intricate and beautiful, full of emotion yet always controlled.

Sethe, a freed former slave, and her daughter live in a house haunted by the spirit of her other daughter, Beloved, who died 18 years ago. When a old friend arrives at the house and asserts his authority, Beloved fights back. It might sound far fetched but it is actually one of the most plausible tales of the supernatural I have read. Morrison blends the fantastical and the normal together effortlessly in flowing, readable prose.

It's not always an easy read, particularly in the first couple ... Read More:

There! He's done it again!! Wilt is back.

It all started for me when I bought "Wilt" by mistake! Since then I got the whole Tom Sharpe collection. I just finished reading this one and I though I would share my thoughts with you.

Well, as I said, Wilt is back. He is head of Liberal Studies now, with 4 "Eva look-alikes" daughters, and with the same dark thoughts in his mind. Inspector Flint is back as well and he can't believe his luck! As always, misunderstandings are present again and Wilt is performing "alternative" terrorism acts, due to his wife's obsession with anything alternative in life, hence the title. If you have not discovered Tom Sharpe yet, don't waste your time, this is a sure bet and he is going to make you laugh, really!! ... Read More:

For those who haven't read Edward Rutherfurd novels, The Forest follows a familiar theme he keeps for all his books: via several intertwined fictional families or various levels within the class structure, Rutherfurd details what it would have been like to live in the New Forest area of Southern England over the past 1,000 years. On yes, and it's the best part of 1,000 pages to boot!!

He cleverly intertwines fact with fiction (with a note at the start explaining where he has done this), allowing the reader to learn a lot about a place without actually feeling they've been in a history lesson. In the case of The Forest this is very much the case - the story is cleverly told with themes continuing between chapters more than in other books of Rutherfurd ... Read More:

34.Birdsong by: Sebastian Faulks
September 16, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Birdsong
Took this book on a recent 7 day holiday - it looked my sort of stuff.
Read about 40% of it then tossed it onto the holiday home library shelf and selected the best of what had been left.
Birdsong is tedious and poorly written. The characters are not engaging - it's just not worth the eye power in reading it.
A bit like the movie "Atonement" - it's not unpleasant, you could watch it, it will do no harm but there are many far far better films.
Birdsong is touted as a modern classic - it is no such thing.

In 'Life Before Man', Margaret Atwood presents us with several lead characters, displays their troubled souls and lets their worlds overlap. No-one would envy any one of these characters but perhaps we can identify with some of their traits. In Elizabeth we witness the self-destruction that comes from excessive self-control - I wanted to slap her, shake her, anything to make her speak out. I watched with sadness Lesje's innocent quest to find love that will not suffocate her, although she risks becoming the one who smothers. Nate is almost docile. He tries to find happiness but is pulled apart between Elizabeth's oppressive coldness and Lesje's neediness.

This is not a cheerful book, but nor is it overly morose. I found that I could see what was going to happen, ... Read More:

36.Veronica Decides to Die by: Paulo Coelho

Books : Veronica Decides to Die
Having run out of books on holiday, I started on other people's leftovers. One of them was Veronika Decides To Die - and in the normal run of things, I wouldn't have lifted it from the shelf. But this was an opportunity to try something a bit different.

And how different.

On the first page, up pops a Brazilian writer called Paulo Coelho. I kid you not, the pompous man has included himself as a character in his own novel. Basically, Veronika has taken an overdose of sleeping pills and whilst waiting to die, she reads a magazine article about Paolo Coelho and some computer game he invented.

And then, in a later chapter, Coelho the character is found discussing his family and the need to write this novel - ostensibly following his own incarceration ... Read More:

I stumbled across this little gem a while ago in my local bookshop, and found myself fascinated by the excellent characterisations and idiosyncracies. It is probably a little expensive for what it is, and yes, it's self-indulgent, but it's still an entertaining read, and I would love to hear the radio play.

This book is really good! Although its a bit weird and unrealistic. Guess thats what makes it good. Sharpe has got the timing right to change between the two parts of the story.

Just because the book is controversial, it doesn't mean it's any good. The story is disjointed, the characters are poor and pointless, and there appears to be little point in the whole thing

40.Moab is My Washpot by: Stephen Fry

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Moab is My Washpot
Stephen Fry`s autobiography is astonishingly frank, very funny and tremendously touching by turns - his life of crime is treated with a frankness which seeks no sympathy and the torments of adolescense leave no stone unturned. Throughout we feel that Stephen is talking to us as the sort of erudite yet unselfconscious companion one would love to spend time with of an evening in a firelit country pub. I hope it won`t be too much longer before the sequel comes out!
