Having read both 'the salesman' and 'desperados' I picked up this book to read whilst on holiday. I expected maybe to read a bit of it, maybe even half. I ended up finishing it in 2 days!

The story is brilliant, sad, funny, moving and a whole lot of other emotions rolled up into a ball. Eddie Virago is an idiot, and thoroughly dislikable and yet you just cant help reading on. Compelling stuff. Joseph O'Connor is probably my fave writer ever, and I'd recomend any of his books, but especially this one.

My only complaint is that it was too short!! It wound the story up very quickly at the end. This however is my opinion and certainly doesn't deminish the greatness of this book ;)

has professor eco peaked already? has all his success gone into his head? does he think he has a band of followers ready to devour half eaten scraps he throws in the waste bin?

these are the sort of questions that cropped in my mind when i read this pompous, self indulgent time waster of a book. instead of any coherent narrative, we are treated to a ramshackle reminiscence of the books he read. and for what? i'm sure all of us , if we delve into our pasts, can bring out memories of books, comics, stories we devoured as children and growing adults. but it's only the plain vanity of umberto eco that he dares to present these memories in a book, with the figment of a story to hold them together, and sell it to us, unsuspecting as we ... 54.Mr Pye by: Mervyn Peake

Although this book is not quite "Gormenghast" it still shows off Peake's exquisite descriptive powers. Not as gloomy or epic as his masterpiece, it has a much simpler plot, however "Mr Pye" keeps the same eccentric characterisation and rich dickensian writing style that makes Peake such a brilliant writer.
Some have said that the book is childlike in it's plot and dialogue. This is completely untrue. Although very humerous, "Mr Pye" is at times deeply disturbing, as one would naturally expect with Mervyn peake.
So, although very different atmospherically to "Gormenghast", this book is still very well worth a read.

I found this book really good up to page 26 - BUT then I noticed the story got a bit disjointed! This was however no fault of Mr. Sharpe; in fact pages 27 - 58 were missing and instead I had a DOUBLE HELPING of pages 59 - 90! In case you hold a copy (that you haven't of course read) or are planning to obtain one please note it was the H/B First Ed. by Andre Deutsch Ltd. 1996, and printed by Clays Ltd. St. Ives plc. I'm now looking for a replacement; it's out of print at CARLTON Books (of 20 Mortimer St., London - who now own the rights) and they have zero stock.

56.The Stars' Tennis Balls by: Stephen Fry
November 01, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Stars' Tennis Balls
Don't read this book expecting a rip-roaring, side-splitting romp that you might expect of a man possessing Stephen Fry's ability (as demonstrated in his other fictional works). Do, however, expect some excellent use of language and some well placed wit. If you are expecting a straight forward comedy, then please don't denigrate the book for not being so - it isn't supposed to be, so holding that against it is much like complaining that a car doesn't float...

This book is an interesting read, and one that is difficult (though I will admit not wholly impossible) to put down. The story itself is far-fetched, but this is supposed to be some escapist fiction. The book also manages to ponder the driving factors behind the characters without grinding itself ... Read More:

After I finished reading Zuckerman Unbound, I was desperate to read another Roth book so I got this one. The Character of Maureen reminded me straight away of the wife of one of my best friend's, He hates his marriage but (somehow-who knows why) he puts up with her lies, shouting and extremely disturbing behaviour (not to mention her cruelty and jealousy). Some people may read this book and think that women like Maureen don't exist but you are wrong. Anyway, its another great book by one of my favourite writers.

I love this little book, have read it more than once, lent it more than once and given it as a present more than once. It is a really lovely story, amazing descriptions of the Outback, and beautiful depictions of children's thoughts and feelings. Lots to relate to as a fan of Australia and as someone who has been young! Go and get it and pass it on!

I must say that `A Severed Head' is one of the most frustrating books I've ever read. I found the characters to be starchy, unrealistically dramatic (especially given their annoying penchant for bursting into foreign exclamations and ruminating about Tolstoy) and difficult to feel sympathy for.

Their actions were often deranged and pathetic and the situations in which the characters found themselves were so utterly of their own making and their reactions to them so prancingly precious that it was hard to care what happened to them at all. In fact the only time I was driven to feel something it was a sense of annoyance at the weak and acquiescent manner of the narrator, whose almost total failure to stop his attempts at some kind of spirit petering out into ...
