After I finished reading Zuckerman Unbound, I was desperate to read another Roth book so I got this one. The Character of Maureen reminded me straight away of the wife of one of my best friend's, He hates his marriage but (somehow-who knows why) he puts up with her lies, shouting and extremely disturbing behaviour (not to mention her cruelty and jealousy). Some people may read this book and think that women like Maureen don't exist but you are wrong. Anyway, its another great book by one of my favourite writers.

This book is 'okay' and for me not much more. It is a very simple read, which is a plus as I felt the plot was lacking. I agree with a reviewer further down the page who said there was nothing to feel for the characters and I was left cold. The story itself started out really well. I remember saying after I'd read the prologue that it was good. However I'd forgotten they had to wait for 18 years and boy did it feel like 18 years.

Lin is completely spineless! Fair enough that he couldn't divorce his wife but he was totally unprepared to at least try out a relationship. I suppose that shows good values but would you wait 18 years for anyone when you could have a relationship with other people. She clearly wanted a family and seemed to ... Read More:

I love this little book, have read it more than once, lent it more than once and given it as a present more than once. It is a really lovely story, amazing descriptions of the Outback, and beautiful depictions of children's thoughts and feelings. Lots to relate to as a fan of Australia and as someone who has been young! Go and get it and pass it on!

64.Veronica Decides to Die by: Paulo Coelho

Books : Veronica Decides to Die
Having run out of books on holiday, I started on other people's leftovers. One of them was Veronika Decides To Die - and in the normal run of things, I wouldn't have lifted it from the shelf. But this was an opportunity to try something a bit different.

And how different.

On the first page, up pops a Brazilian writer called Paulo Coelho. I kid you not, the pompous man has included himself as a character in his own novel. Basically, Veronika has taken an overdose of sleeping pills and whilst waiting to die, she reads a magazine article about Paolo Coelho and some computer game he invented.

And then, in a later chapter, Coelho the character is found discussing his family and the need to write this novel - ostensibly following ... Read More:

Having read both 'the salesman' and 'desperados' I picked up this book to read whilst on holiday. I expected maybe to read a bit of it, maybe even half. I ended up finishing it in 2 days!

The story is brilliant, sad, funny, moving and a whole lot of other emotions rolled up into a ball. Eddie Virago is an idiot, and thoroughly dislikable and yet you just cant help reading on. Compelling stuff. Joseph O'Connor is probably my fave writer ever, and I'd recomend any of his books, but especially this one.

My only complaint is that it was too short!! It wound the story up very quickly at the end. This however is my opinion and certainly doesn't deminish the greatness of this book ;)

I read this as afirst effort into getting back into taking time out to read and relax and as such it was enjoyable in a superficial sort of way. The characters were caricatures rather than real & muddled. It was easy to predict their next move.I did like Mac & his attitude to life, & the fathers unexpected attitude to him. There!!! The characters are not entirely predictable. A light read.

67.The Stars' Tennis Balls by: Stephen Fry
November 01, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Stars' Tennis Balls
Don't read this book expecting a rip-roaring, side-splitting romp that you might expect of a man possessing Stephen Fry's ability (as demonstrated in his other fictional works). Do, however, expect some excellent use of language and some well placed wit. If you are expecting a straight forward comedy, then please don't denigrate the book for not being so - it isn't supposed to be, so holding that against it is much like complaining that a car doesn't float...

This book is an interesting read, and one that is difficult (though I will admit not wholly impossible) to put down. The story itself is far-fetched, but this is supposed to be some escapist fiction. The book also manages to ponder the driving factors behind the characters without grinding itself in a ... Read More:

Only Iris Murdoch can conjure scintillating entertainment out of errant nonsense and she does just that in this curious mixture of Gothic romance, allegory and Shakespearean comedy. Marian Taylor arrives at Graze Castle on a wild and remote part of the Irish coast on a teaching assignment. On arrival, instead of a class of children, she discovers that she is to tutor Hannah, an enigmatic middle-aged woman who is being held prisoner in the castle by a psychological barrier of her own making. Around Hannah there is a small group of neurotic, apparently jobless individuals - all interconnected - who either wish to keep her within the castle grounds or who wish her to escape but seem powerless to effect it. All the usual Murdoch elements are present: religious uncertainty, homosexuality, ... Read More:

69.The Liar by: Stephen Fry

... enough to keep on reading though utterly mind-boggling up to the very end.
It does include a fair amount of Blackadder-like dialogue, as I was hoping for, and a good deal of prep school and college banter. Correct, "No matter how much you shake it, the last drop always runs down you leg" is not Walton's Third Law, I do believe its Newton's Fourth since it has to do with gravity!?
Not an easy read - the upper end of the English language is thoroughly exploited if not directly challenged.
There's quite a lot of "gay stuff" as well. Skirting the invisible boundary Fry manages to stay on the right side of decency. If you are easily offended by sexual innuendo don't even bother.
Through a delicate balance between "funny ha ha" and "funny peculiar" Stephen Fry "lies" ... Read More:

With all due respect to the in house reviewer I would like to assure all potential readers of this fine novel that it is in no way a political book. The politics referred to serve to bring the characters together. At no point in the novel does Greene investigate any of the characters' politics. Nor does he analyse the political situation in Paraguay and Argentina where the novel is set.
It is a novel about love; about the inability to love and the nature of love. It's about the nature of god and how the protagonists have to come to terms with the difficult idea that god is both good and evil. It's about the nature of the catholic church; the complicated nature of human beings. It's about that favourite paradox of Green's that very often those seemingly furthest from redemption, humanity and god are ... Read More:
