After covering football hooligans (Awaydays), pop music (Powder), package tours (Leisure) and Liverpool criminals (Outlaws and Clubland) in previous books, Sampson turns his attention to the terrifying time of life known in the UK as "Freshers Fortnight." In the US, this is called "First Year Orientation"-but whatever the name, it's a time of mighty highs and lows as hordes of teenagers leave home for their first year of college. The novel does a nice job of portraying the haphazard struggle to make friendships, forge identities, and survive homesickness that characterizes those first few months.

Set in Sheffield, the story is told through Kit Hannah, a cooler-than thou indie music maven who, behind a thin veil of cynicism and misanthropy, ... Read More:

I found this book really good up to page 26 - BUT then I noticed the story got a bit disjointed! This was however no fault of Mr. Sharpe; in fact pages 27 - 58 were missing and instead I had a DOUBLE HELPING of pages 59 - 90! In case you hold a copy (that you haven't of course read) or are planning to obtain one please note it was the H/B First Ed. by Andre Deutsch Ltd. 1996, and printed by Clays Ltd. St. Ives plc. I'm now looking for a replacement; it's out of print at CARLTON Books (of 20 Mortimer St., London - who now own the rights) and they have zero stock.

In my opinion, reading Iris Murdoch's tale of moral dilemmas, graced by her taut observations of human behaviour, imparts a dazzling sense of the absurd laced with the comic trivialities of social status and middle class angst. The story provides a cascade of accidental moments, showering its characters with the bitter fragments of disillusionment, victimisation and opportunism: Ludwig (the love struck young American draft dodger), Mitzi (the hard drinking podgy Amazonian ex athlete), Austin (the jobless, emotionally unstable husband of Dorina, father of Garth and brother of Sir Matthew Gibson Grey), the Tisbournes (wealthy gossip laden meddlers) and the Monkleys (the victims of two significant accidents resulting in very bad and strangely good consequences respectively). ... Rupert and Hilda are perfectly matched.

Their only worries are a drop-out son and Morgan, Hilda's unstable sister, just back from America.

Enter Julius, Morgan's ex-lover, determined to give Rupert and Hilda's seemingly impregnable marriage a mild jolt. He finds an unexpectedly spirited opponent in Morgan's husband Tallis.....

This is a tale of the struggle between two demonic beings, one good, one evil. The evil one wins, but the defeat of the good is a fairly honourable one......

76.Blonde by: Joyce Carol Oates
2001-04
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Blonde
From what I've read of hers, it seems to me that Joyce Carol Oates likes very much to centre her story around a girl who is an innocent of the soul, whose very loveliness is her downfall via brutish men. Blonde is the supreme example of this. Certainly, it is very well written and I don't disagree with many of the positive things that have been said about it. Hundreds of pages of the same, almost maudlin, characterisation can get a bit tiresome, though. It's perfectly valid to draw attention to 'Marilyn''s insecurity, neediness and desire to perfect her craft, and doubtless the men of Hollywood and elsewhere at the time could be ruthless little snakes and predators. But subtlety-wise, Oates verges on the hysterical. It also gets quite blurry towards the end and seems ... Read More:

Encountered this book after reading 'Awaydays,' by the way, and its a great read to be fair. know where I'm going. No two ways about it this book is pure brilliant. That is a fact. The way it evokes working class life in Liverpool by the way, the crime, it's characters, their verbal tics makes it seem real rather than mere caricature in fairness, knowmean. Others in line with the blurb on the book have described it as Goodfellas on the Mersey, Scorcese with a scouse ascent, know where I'm going, and while I can see what they're saying in fairness, its more Roddy Doyle with a scouse ascent and violent tendencies, and thats the God's honest truth. That is a fact. End of.

This is a wonderfully crafted story. Moggach, renowned for her gruesome murder mysteries shows a far lighter side in this delightful story of a girl falling in love with a much older man, and becoming intrigued by and caught up with the characters in his past. Russell Buffery is a well known actor and radio star who has been married not once but several times, and we see him initially on the verge of the end of another marriage. However the emphasis is on the humourous, human, slightly squalid state of his life as he ends his middle years. Chapter by chapter we are shown the lives of his "other women" and children, the reader becoming, as the young woman, acquainted with a series of delightfully funny and poignant families and relationships. I loved this book, and ... Read More:

79.Children of the Storm by: Elizabeth Peters

Books : Children of the Storm

Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences. ... An Iris short story that does not exhibit the `weight' of her lengthier novels. Consequently I found myself less engrossed in the plot development and distanced from the first person narrator. The story, however, reveals many of Murdoch's themes of loss, domestic power struggles, secrets, lies and the complexities of love. The story revolves around two brothers, coming to terms with the death of their domineering mother, the consequences of disillusionment, and an inability to connect with close family members. The chain of events (unveiled in the maternal mansion with its exquisitely described garden) exposes the dangers of uncommunicative relationships, emotional and physical exploitation, the pain of grief and betrayal. And all this drama is played out in full view of a discreet and ubiquitous ... Read More:
