Rupert and Hilda are perfectly matched.

Their only worries are a drop-out son and Morgan, Hilda's unstable sister, just back from America.

Enter Julius, Morgan's ex-lover, determined to give Rupert and Hilda's seemingly impregnable marriage a mild jolt. He finds an unexpectedly spirited opponent in Morgan's husband Tallis.....

This is a tale of the struggle between two demonic beings, one good, one evil. The evil one wins, but the defeat of the good is a fairly honourable one......

83.The Pilgrimage: A Contemporary Quest for Ancient Wisdom by: Paulo Coelho

Books : The Pilgrimage: A Contemporary Quest for Ancient Wisdom
This is Coelho's first book, written before he became famous and before the Alchemist. I was impressed by the Alchemist, 11 Minutes and the Zahir but I was bemused and trully horrified by this supposedly true story. I think it shows how traditional religion can distort people's perception of reality and led me to doubt Coelho's intelligence and sanity. It made me concerned that others might be persuaded to explore Christian mystic sects and take superstition seriously or even attempt to copy some of the extreme techniques in the book which seemed to describe Coelho engaging with demonic voices in his head... Does he suffer from schizophrenia? I think it shows how organised religion can be damaging and how people can be taken in by cults. Dangerous rubbish. ... Read More:

This is a wonderfully crafted story. Moggach, renowned for her gruesome murder mysteries shows a far lighter side in this delightful story of a girl falling in love with a much older man, and becoming intrigued by and caught up with the characters in his past. Russell Buffery is a well known actor and radio star who has been married not once but several times, and we see him initially on the verge of the end of another marriage. However the emphasis is on the humourous, human, slightly squalid state of his life as he ends his middle years. Chapter by chapter we are shown the lives of his "other women" and children, the reader becoming, as the young woman, acquainted with a series of delightfully funny and poignant families and relationships. I loved this ... Read More:

86.Engleby by: Sebastian Faulks

Books : Engleby
Having read and enjoyed Birdsong I bought this to read on holiday. It is nothing like Birdsong!
The book is in the form of a diary and initially I found it difficult going as the language is almost "Vicki Pollard" in places but this is because Mike Engleby is young; as he gets older his vocabulary and literary skills improve but by then I found the book totally compelling.
You get drawn into the narrative, never quite sure exactly what is the truth and what emotion you should be feeling; it is that good.
One of the best books I've read this year.

'An Unofficial Rose' strikes me as a little different from Iris Murdoch's earlier work. Essentially the key subject of the book is a critical mid-life dilemma: whether to carry on living as you have for years, or to turn your back on it all for the sake of a new and passionate love. Randall Peronett, owner of a rose nursery, chooses to take the gamble, leaving his wife Ann to take off to Italy with the younger, glamorous Lindsay Rimmer; but he's only free to do so because his father, Hugh, regretting in part at least his own decision to stay with his late wife rather than leave her for the magnetic yet repellent Emma Sands, smoothes Randall's path for him. The deserted Ann agonises whether to continue carrying a torch for her errant husband or to accept the attention of Felix ... Read More:

I read this as afirst effort into getting back into taking time out to read and relax and as such it was enjoyable in a superficial sort of way. The characters were caricatures rather than real & muddled. It was easy to predict their next move.I did like Mac & his attitude to life, & the fathers unexpected attitude to him. There!!! The characters are not entirely predictable. A light read.

A thoroughly thought provoking read. Every aspect was a joy; from his endless fountain of wit to his dark ideas of what life could have been.

Making History changed my life, by far the best book I've ever read.

Good or bad? Well, if its going to come down it good - a clever thought provoking book covering some key themes; anti Semitism, relationships and how the sexes approach them, the art of the writer, the native living abroad. Given that's its entirely dialogue its difficult at times to follow who is saying what. Although spread out over some 200 pages its not dense type and can be read quickly; this helps as you feel it's worth holding what you know in a puzzled haze until it unravels towards the end. I can't say this is a great Roth book in the class of American Pastoral, Portnoy's Complaint etc - they for me have much more about them in content and depth of quality. That said such is the quality of Roth's writing there is still plenty to ponder in these pages. If this is to be your first ... Read More:
