For almost fifty years, H. H. Scullard's text on Roman history, From the Gracchi to Nero: A History of Rome from 133 B.C to A. D. 68, has been a staple of introductory Ancient History courses. Scullard's writing is clear, concise, and for the most part it stays away from embellishment or falling into the trap of creating a coherent narrative. While the endless stream of names, dates, places and times can be difficult to keep track of, the book if collected into a mostly chronological and thematic selection of chapters revolving around a particular topic - The Gracchi, Pompey the Great, Julius Ceasar and so on.

The work is split into roughly two halves. The first deals with the time from the Gracchi brothers and their attempts at ... Read More:

R. Syme reveals the real power players in ancient Roman society, the backers of the competing generals searching personal domination of the empire.
That empire contained two classes of citizens: the patricians and the plebs. Rome was ruled without a real constitution (legality was a casual or partisan question). In fact, an oligarchy of 20 to 30 men detained all power strings. They represented whom? The main factions involved were the optimates (wealthy nobility), the nobiles (consular houses), the equites (provincial aristocracies, captains of industry and finance) and the novi homines (senators for the 1st time). Three other groups as a whole were politically very important: the plebs, the soldiers and the Senate.
Ambitious generals ... Read More:

This book, by Lord Mahon, is the only exhaustive autobiography of the great General Belisarius. This is well written and well researched as Lord Mahon exhaustively takes you through the great man's life.
In spite of the age of the book it stands up well to modern day scrutiny. Yet to enjoy it you have to see through Mahon's demonisation of Justinian & Theodora. But all in all an excellent read, telling the story of one of Rome's most exceptional men.

Not an easy book to review. This is a 'scholarly' account - Curtius' "History of Alexander" is one of the sources for the great general's life, written some time after his death, written by a Roman, and written for a Roman market which venerated the military genius of Alexander and appreciated his skills in prefiguring the Roman methods of diplomacy ... i.e., proffering the hand of friendship, but carrying a very sharp sword.

Anyone with an academic interest in the era will be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of this work and will hardly require a populist review. However, anyone looking for an accessible, readable account and analysis of Alexander's career and impact on Europe and Asia will not find it here. So, while the work merits ... Read More:

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Grant's scholarship is immense, he has read all the sources and writes on Greek and Roman history with great authority. But equally important ofor my money is his judgment. He weighs ups complex and contentious issues and offers a balanced and yet never heated view. For all that his books, especially this one are not dry, its a kind of passion tested in the crucible of very wide reading and thought.

This books starts with what was known at the time of writing about the earliest beginnings of Rome and proceeds to the fall of the western empire.

It looks at those aspects of Roman society, mores and organisation which allowed it to bring the world a new civilisation. It doesn't ... Read More:

The Germania is Tacitus's description of the tribes inhabiting Germania, the area to the north of the Roman empire including modern Germany but also several other areas. It is pretty unremarkable apart from his charming description of a battle between two of the tribes: "they even gratified us with the spectacle of a battle, in which above sixty thousand Germans were slain not by Roman arms, but, what was still grander, by mutual hostilities, as it were for our pleasure and entertainment". Lovely.

The Agricola is a far more civilised work, his biography of his father-in-law Gnaeus Julius Agricola, governor of Britannia and conqueror of Scotland. From a literary point of view it is remarkable for the stirring speech that Tacitus writes for Calgacus, ... Read More:
