As a first time classics student I found this book of great use. It covers topics clearly and includes interesting facts that are often overlooked in lectures. The book covers the period from the battle of Actium right through the reign of Augustus and covers all of the major areas of importance to a historian, namely slavery, women, religion, art, politics and more besides. However the main fault of this book is that it is poorly laid out. The chapter headings are vague and there is no index so you often have to do a lot of reading before you find what you are looking for. I would highly recommend this book to a general reader, or an A-level/first year university student. However beyond the first year of university it is of little value as ... Read More:

Peter Green is one of the foremost scholars of Alexander the Great. His biography of the Macedonian King is based upon the evidence of the ancient sources, which are themselves only secondary sources, since the eye-witnesses to Alexander's exploits are unfortunately no longer extant. Green does not have an agenda; he is merely evaluating the ancient evidence of Arrian, Plutarch, Quintus Curtius, Diodorus Siculus, Strabo, etc. as it they read it in Callisthenes, Ptolemy, Aristobulus, Onesicritus, etc. All of the non-extant primary sources had their own agendas. Callisthenes was Alexander's press agent and image maker; Ptolemy, who highjacked the king's body, wrote his subsequent history of the expediton in such a way that his own exploits were ... Their vision was a society without master or slave, just equals: surely a goal worth fighting for. They took on the mighty Roman Empire and paid a heavy price. Did they do so in vain? Spartacus and his fellow slaves have inspired many generations to rise up against oppression and for equality. Today's generation of "wage slaves" would do well to note just how lucky we are by comparison to the slaves of 73 BC. But with growing inequality in our societies, should we sit back and accept our lot, or should we take inspiration from the Spartacists and struggle for a more meaningful existence? Rumsfeld, Berlosconi, Wolfowitz, Murdoch etc. beware!
Lewis Grassic Gibbon presents a complex history within the most gripping narrative. He forces us ... Read More:

This book is dreadful! Its so dry and dull and impossible to get into. I kept falling asleep. You have to really want to absorb everything to glean anything from this book and even then you'll struggle.

whenever I put it down (for a much needed rest) I came away feeling cross and all I could remember about it was the amount of concentration needed to remain awake and focused. It is the literary equivalent of a challenging mountain climb with non of the satisfaction at reaching the summit.

This book has the power to damage an interest in the subject by presenting a one dimensional approach.

Livy has a knack for breathing life into historical characters and is a natural storyteller in a way you rarely find among historians. I've seldom been entranced by historical writing in the way I was reading this book.

The book encompasses a big chunk of Roman history and Livy covers the ground at quite a pace so it can be a bit of a rollercoaster. As a crash course on Pre-imperial Roman History I doubt it can be beaten.
