This is an excellent book. The so called "Middle Imperial Roman Army" is a very underrated part of Roman Military History and has been ignored by historians who tend to ignore the time between Marcus Aurelius and Constantine when the Roman Empire faced by powerful new enemies such as the Goths, Sassanid Persians and Palmyrans as well as many usurpers nearly tore itself apart.
The book covers the transition of the Roman Legionary in the face of these threats by taking the example of detailed records of one legion and examining its rite of passage through this turbulent period. The plates, the major selling point of any Osprey are very good and have many ideas for Modellers and Wargamers alike to pursue.
An exciting and readable scholarly ... Read More:

In this short book, Nic Fields presents us with a look at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, the battle that delayed the Persian army and saved Greece.
Yet, there is more to this book than simply a description of this famous event. Fields covers the 'before, during, and after' stages of the battle, explaining to the reader the origins of the campaign as well as its conclusion with the defeat of Mardonios's army at Plataea in 479 BC.

He presents us with short biographies of the commanders of both sides, covering Leonidas of Sparta and the Great Persian king, Xerxes. He also explains to the reader the equipment and fighting techniques of the Greek and Persian armies, explaining how they differed and how this would ultimately be the ... Read More:

This book deals with the conflicts between the Greeks and Persians beginning with the birth of the Persian King Kyros the Great to the signing of `The King's Peace' between the Persians and the Greek cities. This book includes all the major conflicts, such as the battles of Marathon and Thermopylai. The major source drawn on for this book is from The Histories by the Greek historian Herodotus, the `Father of History'. Although this book is somewhat light in places, it is well written and researched. This book would be perfect for anyone studying this period without wishing to go through the original sources.

Buckley does his utmost to present history from as many different angles as possible- charting the causes for events as given by as many sources as possible- while also giving summaries of the main arguments from modern scholars. This book is useful both to the student and to anyone interested in Classical Greek History, clearly and concisely explaining and supporting with close refence to original texts the course of history in Ancient Greece from the Origional Settlements in 1000 BC, to the Persian Invasions, the Peloponnesian War and The rise and fall of Alexander- a cracking good account, objective and informative, I fully recommend it.

Speaking as an ex-Latin teacher and writer of Roman historical fiction, I have to say I was disappointed in the audiobook. First, it's very abridged. My favourite emperor Titus only gets 10 minutes!

Second, I don't agree with the pronunciation. Someone told Jacobi to pronounce 'Caenis' as 'SEE-niss' rather than 'KAI-niss' as I would pronounce it. And he pronounces 'quaestor' as 'keester'. A very unfortunate choice...

Still, it's Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus.

You might want to turn directly to the last chapter in which the gluttony and debauchery of Imperial Rome is most clearly spelled out. Then again you might want to wait for that as one does for a dessert. Then again I shouldn't be such a smart aleck.

Jerome Carcopino who had this published in France in 1939 is a Latin and Greek scholar from the old school, from the days when Latin was required in our public schools and any educated person had at least a smattering of the dry stuff. This book presumes some Latin and some knowledge of Roman history. Additionally the Latin is not always translated into English--I presume it is the same in Carcopino's original French. And he refers to personages in Roman history without giving dates or even a sense ... Read More:

'The Romans: From Village to Empire' is a new book by the Oxford University Press meant to be a companion to their earlier volume on the Greek civilisation. This text, written by scholars Mary T. Boatwright, Daniel J. Gargola, and Richard J.A. Talbert, in intended for several audiences - those with a general interest in history, beginning undergraduate students in historical survey courses, those with interest in archaeology, culture, and military events, and those who want a better understanding of the secular and sacred empire that preceded but gave rise to the current world of Christendom and European nation-states. The book is not one that is heavy on details, but is very well documented and annotated, with pictures, maps and drawings complementing most pages. Maps ... Read More:
