Is this book as awesome as the man? Probly not, but i enjoyed it anyway. I've read numerous boring historical accounts before and its nice to find one with a bit more to it for once. As interesting as it is informative. A nice change.

Although only one chapter of the book is actually dedicated to describing the battle itself, I still found this to be a fantastic read. In my opinion this is largely due to Adrian Murdoch's writing style - not dry and acamedic (like some other books on the subject), but instead, it is easy to read and is clearly intended for the non-expert.

Murdoch gives an excellent general description of the situation prior to Teutoburg, in addition to a more focused analysis of what the main personalities were doing up until then. After the chapter on the battle itself, he has written a few chapters about the immediate aftermath as well as the consequences it would have in more modern times.

Although I was a little disappointed ... Read More:

In this brilliant book Adrian Goldsworthy asesses the Roman army in one of it's most interesting periods. He does so in the style of John Keegan and later VD Hanson - looking at the experience of battle for the general, the unit and the soldier. This is an art in itself and Goldsworthy pulls it off perfectly. He does for Roman military history what Keegan and Hanson did for their respective periods (the medieval and modern military history of Keegan and the Greek history of Hanson) and he does so with every bit of genius, class and readability of the aforementioned two. No wonder he got the D.Phil - this is historical brilliance!

I thought I'd wait until I'd finished reading this edition before writing a review, but after reading around 2/3rd's of the book I'm exasperated at just how much appears to have been omitted already. As noted in a previous review the reasons are noted in the foreword; but this can't excuse an almost savage excision of the military conflicts that occurred during this history. Indeed, entire civil wars are reduced to an editorial note before proceeding on to the next detail of internal conflict within the Church.
That's not to say I don't find such details interesting. It's just that in attempting to address a previous imbalance in favour of military detail, this edition has swung so far the other way you are left feeling there are gaping holes ... Read More:
