Compared to the Basques, say, or the Welsh who have mostly just sat around in the same old mountain ranges for centuries without ever going anywhere (no offence intended) - compared to them the career of the Goths is a white-knuckle ride. They seem to have fought their way through half the countries in Europe. So I found their story very exciting.

Heather's more recent book, The Fall of The Roman Empire, I feel is aimed at casual readers like me, whereas I think this one is perhaps meant more for students. My interest in the Goths comes from liking Tolkien; I don't have much idea about debates on 'ethnicity'.
