Chris Wickham has constructed an important synthesis of the state of play in early medieval studies. Surveying regions as varied as Italy, Africa, Egypt, Syria and Denmark, Wickham focuses in particular on social and economic developments during the transformation of the ancient world.

The positive aspects of this book are numerous. The prose is intelligent and erudite without lapsing into the unreadable. The evidence is clearly presented and analsyed on its own terms, rather than being crowbared into 'metanarratives', of which Wickham remains suspicious throughout. The fascination of the book lies in its detail. Whether Danish excavations, Anatolian saints' lives or Egyptian tax records, the depth and breadth of research is extraordinary. ... Read More:

Pliny's letters give an eminent impression of the life of a wealthy barrister at the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd one in the Roman Empire. He was also an honest civil servant of his country.

Pliny was a tolerant (`anyone who hates faults, hates mankind'), honest and loyal man. He loved liberty (which was regained in Rome with Trajan after the harsh dictatorship of Domitian) and profited as much as he could of his wealth, because `nothing is so short and fleeting as the longest of human lives'.
Politically he was a staunch defender of the state religion (he condemned Christians) and an opponent of secret ballot, because it lead to `wanton irresponsibilities'.
His view on mankind was rather pessimistic: `very ... Read More:

Good illustrations although, typically of McBride, they are rather fantastic and most of the subjects seem to be modelled on Swarzenegger! The main text is very synoptic in the first half and does not go into much more detail in the second, instead elaborating on the ethnic groups recruited by the Byzantines. The book would be more interesting if it included more historical content or at least a chronology. The achievements of Belisarius and Narses are some of the greatest in military history but they are only mentioned in passing, and only in the context of army organisation.

An excellent tactical, operational and strategic analysis of the three Punic Wars, detailing in large part the career of IMHO the greatest general of all time, Hannibal, who almost managed, with limited support,to bring what was then the greatest miliatary power on earth to its knees.

Liddell-Hart may be correct in his estimation of Scipio Africanus being greaer then Napoleon, but Hannibal? no way

The Gladiators is a compelling read start to finish. Fik Meijer is an expert at illustrating the raw grittiness of an era so poignantly marked by violence. He not only delves into the pernicious events giving the reader an image with the utmost clarity, but he takes a step back to describe the origins of gladiator contests during the ancient Greek era. He puts a face on the condemned gladiator, where he came from, how he was armed, how long did he survive?

Whilst not in any way condoning the Gladiator games, he is careful not to judge based on today’s modern social norms. To look back with disdain is anachronistic and takes away from the experience giving a distorted perspective. Instead, he tries to describe what he would see as a spectator, ... Read More:
