This book has changed my whole aspect of the ancient Greeks. As one of the Renster's pupils, i think this book could become a real chestnut.

The Hobbes translation and David Grene's intelligent and relevent notes make this the best version of Thucydides I have yet read. While I am not a scholar in this area, I feel that this is probably the grandest history ever written and that the Hobbes translation does it justice. It has been said that at best a translator is not merely changing the work from language to language but giving it a new life. Hobbes succeeded briliantly in this, and I feel that through Mr. Grene's notes, the translation is as near to the original as one can get.

I'm about to start on an OU course on the Roman Empire so thought I'd catch up with the period before the Empire and plumped for this one.

If you just want aprecis of what happened BEFORE the Empire started in earnest (i.e. pre-Augustus Caesar) then this is the book for you. If you want a more in-depth of the Roman Republic there are bigger and more comprehensive books.

A good read and a good introduction to the subject.

Books : The Twelve Caesars (Penguin Classics)
To be honest, I'm not exactly sure why I bought this book. But I'm glad I did, it proved very readable and very informative. I had no knowledge of the Caesars prior to reading, and this certainly hindered my understanding of this work.
The fact that it is written by somebody who actually lived under the reign of the final Caesar he discusses (Domitian), it gives a unique view that modern history cannot compare with. However, this also lets it down slightly. For instance, Suetonius has a habit of talking about omens and portents in great detail. Because he has written in the age, he writes with the superstitions of the Romans as well.
Personally, I find it hard to believe that each emporer had myriad omens dictating that they would ... Read More:

Mr Cartledge's edition is a well formed book about 'ancient' Greece. The book has certain attractive features:

1) it is treating all historical aspects, rather than a narrow collection of them; so it starts talking about the greek landscape and its importance, something not aknowledged by other accounts.

2) the chapters are written by well informed scholars which in most cases draw information from the sources, or they reach well thought conclusions.

3) although the book could be useful basically for the layman its standards are high and in most cases the truth (as given by ancient texts and archaeological evidence) is given.

However, I have found it inadequate in some points; for example:
