I attended this exhibition at the British Museum and it was FABULOUS! Very well done, and the book that goes along with the exhibition is quite informative. I really enjoyed both the exhibition and the book. Unfortunately, I purchased the book at the Museum and paid GBP 40 for it! I wish I had realized that it could be purchased on Amazon for a much lower price. Buy it!

It is called a 'brief history' but it is surprisingly in-depth. This book in truth strikes a nice equilibrium between the readable and scholarly. It manages to cover all of the clear-cut salient points in regards to Greek history, politics, arts, culture and science. It happens to do it in some degree of detail yet also manages to touch on the surrounding historiography while also including a bibliography for those wanting to explore further. You hear of the 'Dorian invasion' theory and Sparta in regards to Nazi Germany and Communism, yet this book does not wish to interpose its opinions; it merely provides the salient details, key debates and at the most comes to the most likely conclusion. This is what you need from both a text book and an ... Read More:

This is a wonderful book, not least because of the accompanying information, maps, appendices and photos of artifacts that all swell the readers understanding of the locations and context of this fantastic writer.

It is ideal for novices and experts alike, with very modern translation that has been painstakingly researched.

This is about as good as it gets. Its not very portable though!

Admittedly there's no beating the OCD but this is a brilliant alternative. The entries come from the OCD itself but it excludes the bibliographies per subject - which frankly are out of date anyway. As the other reviewer here has mentioned, the entries are wide ranging and eclectic, but always informative, readable and stimulating. I have the hardback version (necessary for the amount of referencing it gets!) and the book itself is nicely produced with good weight paper and excellent illustrations. Whether you're a serious student or an interested amateur, this is a brilliant buy.

This book is meant to be a short introduction to the society of Rome during the late Republic for A-level and first year university students. As such I expected it to be a rather dry and academic work, considering I've never done a course on the Classics.

Instead I found this book to be lively, readable and interesting look at the social trends taking place within the Roman Republic from the days of Tiberius Gracchus to those of Octavian.

It covers subjects such as religion, political institutions, politics, the aristocracy and Roman imperialism in a few short chunks.
Mary Beard is an expert on this period, and she's a great writer to boot. Michael Crawford also lends his expertise to the title, presenting some ... Read More:

Thucydides follows self-consciously on from Herodotus as a 'historian' but takes a very different tack. Partly this is due to their place in history: Herodotus was the product of a triumphant Athens leading the mediterannean world after shockingly defeating the huge Persian invasion of Greece, while Thucydides lives through the decline of Athens from her high point under Pericles through to her final defeat under Sparta. A critic of Athenian democracy and the rise of the demagogues, Thucydides is also a participant in the 37 years long war, as strategos (General) who was defeated at Amphipolis and exiled from Athens. What is amazing is his ability to stay detached and analytical, despite his personal involvement in events.

This is a big book in volume as well as content being over 500 pages long but Oxford historian Robin Lane Fox has contrived to make it interesting for the reader from beginning to end. Many facts have been written about Alexander over the years, some true, some doubtful and much that is pure speculation. This in turn has given Alexander a mythical quality, bordering on god like proportions.

The author's writing style is both concise and lucid with no pretensions to the fact that he is the master and the reader by his very nature is the pupil. In a nutshell the author writes for everyone not just the scholar. This book is for anyone with an interest in the life and times of Alexander. The author progresses through the life of Alexander putting ... Read More:

This book is a delightful mix of the written word and the accumulation of the finest photographs I have seen of Hadrians Wall Country. Through these photographs I felt that Roger Clegg - through his depth of love and passion for this bleak and beautiful landscape - captured the book's title of `The Spirit of Hadrians Wall'. Congratulations to Roger Clegg and Mark Richards on producing such a wonderful book.

This is a quirky book. It is composed of largely self-contained textual vignettes. This makes it easy to dip into for short and entertaining reads. Previous reviews have correctly inferred that a few of these short pieces appear to have a tenuous link to ancient practices. You probably have to be as contemptuous of bumbling, overbearing, intrusive, and taxing Big Government as I am to enjoy the bits where the author mounts his soap box. Because of the vignette layout these bits are easily skipped by those who object.

For the rest, Peter Jones provides many fascinating insights into how the Ancients dealt with--or failed over--issues that we still experience today. It would be difficult to compare ancient and modern governance without injecting a viewpoint. ... Read More:

If you require information about anything the internet has probably become an unbeatable source of knowledge but for me maybe I am old fashioned there is still nothing to beat a good book and this is a good book. It is full of facts and photographs laid out in such a way that they are interesting to the reader.

The main reason that I personally bought the book was that I had visited the site a dozen years ago and my memories of the place were starting to fade in my mind. As soon as I opened the book and the photographs of various parts of the site shone back at me from the pages, all the old memories flooded back and it was as though I had been there only yesterday. The book covers virtually everything that anyone is likely to want to know about Pompeii ... Read More:
