This books provides for the very first time a comprehensive and useful synthesis of one of most enthralling period of European History, the Bronze age. The documentation is impressive, as anyone should wait for such a volume, and the extensive bibliography provides an useful entry for every scholar. Only one remark: if the organisation in topics rather than by following a classical, but old-fashioned, culture-historical framework surely helps the reader who wishes to find quickly the data, this leads however to a recurrent absence of global interpretation. Therefore, because of the quantity of data exposed, one may experience a sense of loss of history throughout the text. Despite this sole weakness, this volume remains, I think, a must have ... Michael Wood is brave enough to take the necessary leap of imagination to bring all the mythical elements together and make real sense of them. Throughly researched, he provides common sense reasons for the cause of the Trojan war but at the same time the book is totally compelling and moving. It is also very well produced and illustrated.

On the surface, Dying for the Gods seems to be a well-researched, considered and thought-provoking study of human sacrifice in Iron Age Europe, taking as it does the most current archaelogical research at the time of writing and poring through texts and other material evidence (carvings, statues, burial goods) to discuss the various aspects of sacrifice, its underlying concepts and the role of water, fire and earth in the deaths of human beings for religious purposes, in itself a fascinating and worthwhile area of study.

There is indeed an amount of evidence to suggest that bog bodies and other burial finds of skulls and bones were the result of planned sacrifice, and I do not disagree with this view, but a lot of the "proof" Miranda ... Read More:

Very good work indeed. I can't tell it better than the former costumer (D.Evans). I agree at 1000%
Nevertheless, concerning the CD I must disagree. It is not glued to inside of the book cover. In fact, it is inside a plastic pocket that is glued to the inside of the book cover. This plastic pocket can be easily opened thanks to a pre-cut guideline.
My written english is awful I know, sorry, but I wanted to tell you that you can indeed take the CD from the book. On my opinion, there is not an Editor's mistake on this.

Having looked at this book many times and thinking maybe I could have two other products for the price, I eventually puchased this book. The fact it is cheaper than high street book stores is good, but I was well impressed when it arrived. It is packed with information and great pictures and artwork. After I finish it I will be looking at related products by the author, this was well worth it.

Speaking as an ex-Latin teacher and writer of Roman historical fiction, I have to say I was disappointed in the audiobook. First, it's very abridged. My favourite emperor Titus only gets 10 minutes!

Second, I don't agree with the pronunciation. Someone told Jacobi to pronounce 'Caenis' as 'SEE-niss' rather than 'KAI-niss' as I would pronounce it. And he pronounces 'quaestor' as 'keester'. A very unfortunate choice...

Still, it's Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus.

Michael Simkins 'The Roman Army from Hadrian to Constantine' was first published in the 1970's, which makes it a bit outdated, considering the numerous strides made in historical scholarship and archaeology since the book's publication.

As a result, much of the development of arms and armour during the third century 'crisis' seems to be absent from this book, as are the developments taking place in the Roman militray during the reigns of Diocletian and Constantine.

The contents of the book are also puzzling. Following a 4 page chronology of the history of the Empire during this period, the author then sets out on a tangent about Hadrian's Wall for about 12 pages. He discusses the building of the milecastles, the medical and funeral services ... Read More:

Plutarch's biographies of 9 important political and military leaders give the reader an in depth insight into the workings of the Roman Empire. It is a gloomy picture of a world dominated by the wealthy patricians at home and by Roman generals and their foot folk at large.

Rome's democratic system consisted of two parties: the patricians (the wealthy aristocrats and landowners) represented by the consuls and the plebeians represented by the tribunes. However, the tribunes had to be unanimous. If one defected to the other party, the patricians controlled completely the political scene.

`Coriolanus' was a staunch defender of the ancient aristocratic laws.
`Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus' were tribunes of the plebs. The former proposed agrarian ... Read More:
