I picked up this book being interested in the Roman millitary but not knowing a thing on the subect. After simply browsing through several chapters, I knew enough to write an essay. The writing, whilst sometimes vague and confusing, is extremely informative for the greater part. The pictures are a fine addition, and the battle descriptions are worth praise.
The book is divided into three sections. The Early Army, from the founding of Rome to the Legionary. The Proffesional Army, from Marian to the Batlle of Adrianople, and the Army of Late Antiquity. The ill fated army that fought at the collapse of the western empire. In fact, it is essentiall to note that the Byzantine Empire hardly gets a mention in the works, although most intrepid ... This book is intended for everybody who is interested in byzantine history,(maybe for an early student of byzantium as well)but not for specialists.
Written in an academic language by Cyril Mango, i had some unknonwn words. The language of the other historians writing in the book is quite flawless. The book contains many information on both culture and military history of byzantium and is superbly illustrated(emphasis given to hagiographies). My rating is 5 stars for all above; but what made it a 5 and not a 4 is the sincerity of the writers as to religion(christianity). Patriarchs, priests and followers of christianity arent seen as holy persons(*Julius Norwich* for example did exactly the opposite in many cases); instead, they are judged in ... Read More:

This is a must for history students and buffs alike. In fact is is a great read full stop! Many books of this genre are dry but Tacitus takes you there and his commentary is both concise, and at times caustic and witty.

Although only one chapter of the book is actually dedicated to describing the battle itself, I still found this to be a fantastic read. In my opinion this is largely due to Adrian Murdoch's writing style - not dry and acamedic (like some other books on the subject), but instead, it is easy to read and is clearly intended for the non-expert.

Murdoch gives an excellent general description of the situation prior to Teutoburg, in addition to a more focused analysis of what the main personalities were doing up until then. After the chapter on the battle itself, he has written a few chapters about the immediate aftermath as well as the consequences it would have in more modern times.

Although I was a little disappointed regarding ... Read More:

While we hear - less than before - of the unquestionable glories of ancient Europe, little is said, except for the relative specialist, of its tragedies. For the Roman Republic (to late First Cent. BCE), Rubicon did much to contribute to rebalancing the picture, with an honest examination of the disaster of the civil wars of that time. Kagan does the same for classical Greece with his account of the 27 years of a largely aimless war, agonisingly reminiscent of WW1 rather than WW2, with the scale of its casualties. This isn't just history of the long past: it has resonances, painful warnings, of our own day, above all in the story of Athens' assault on far-distant Sicily, a catastrophic venture. Little was known of its prospective opponent, Syracuse, ... Read More:

As a great fan of Caesar, I loved this. It's surprisingly enthralling once you get into it, but takes a bit of work to start, especially if you're not familiar with the setting and political background.

Originally written as a series of despatches to the Senate back in Rome, it is undoubtedly propaganda created by Caesar to justify his own conquests, and make sly digs at his enemies back in Rome.

Starting with his departure from Rome in 58bc after his consulship, this takes in the battles against the rebellion under Vercongetorix as well as the abortive first invasion of Britain.

It might not be to everyone's taste, but I think Caesar's an elegant and lucid writer who uses understatement as a style factor.

Ross Cowan acknowledges on the first page of this book that our knowledge of Roman battle tactics is fragmentary at best, and that much scorn has been poured over the ideas of those who have tried to reconstruct the battle mechanics of the legion.

That said, he presents a fascinating and informative look at the way the Roman legion operated in the field. Presenting information on everything from the size and organisation of the legion, to its offensive and defensive formations, its battle lines and manouveres, and the control and cohesion of the legion in battle.

Making use of careful study of the ancient texts, and the most up-to-date research among scholars, and not to mention the newest findings in modern experimental archaeology; Cowan ... Read More:

As the other reviewers have said, this series does give some really interesting insights in the civilisations of the so called 'babarians', many of them were advanved and sophisticated, and the romans certainly were a ruthless bunch.
However, i could not help thinking that some of the time mr jones was simply spouting some vitriolic anto roman diatribe, he only focuses on the negative aspects of roman society, and on the bad things that they did. He treats them as though they were the ancient equivalent to Nazi's who suppressed learning and education, and sought to annihilate anyone they didn't particularly like.
He seems to forget that the world was diffrent them, people were more brutal and ruthless, and they people them often would use force and brute ... Read More:
