In which an apparently loyal aide gets a mountain of bile off his chest and proves that no man is a hero to his private secretary ...

Procopius was the Byzantine equivalent of a civil servant. Among other things he was secretary to the great general Belisarius. Throughout his life, and in the books which he published in his lifetime, he appeared to be totally loyal to Belisarius, and even more so to Emperor Justinian.

He wrote an eight-volume history of Belisarius's campaigns, usually referred to as "The Histories" which is one of the definitive historial sources. Later he wrote an an account of the great works of architecture construced under Justinian's regime. That book, known as "The Buildings," is so nauseatingly ... Read More:

I have read much history in the last few years but no other historical writer has moved me quite like Gibbon. I have shed tears more than once whilst engaged on this extraordinary journey. Until now, my reading of history has been an effort to forge a dim and tenuous link with peoples of the past in the hope of entering, in some small way, their minds and worlds. With Gibbon though my kinship with the generations has been bought vividly to life and made it all too clear, that for good or ill, men and women are the same in all times and all places and that all history is just one story. On a day when fresh war and misery has just erupted in a place which the Romans would have called Colchis (Georgia) it is impossible not to feel that this is the just the ... Read More:

I greatly enjoyed reading this book even though it was very basic. I thought that it provided a good overview of the subject.

I had previously read quite a lot about Greek philosophy and a bit about Greek mathematics, art and literature and I found that these topics were too basic for my liking although they were at the level that one would expect from this sort of book.

A few years back I read some Euclid but don't look for any explanation of this topic in this book. I have also read some Plato and Aristotle and I thought that the treatment in this book was too basic as was the discussion of drama, poetry, sculpture and architecture. Most of the military history was rather basic too.

I think that the discussions on politics, ... Read More:

Barry Cunliffe was Professor of European Archaeology at Oxford from 1972 until he retired recently. He has spent at least thirty years conducting excavations at numerous Iron Age sites throughout Europe, especially in England and Brittany.

In this book he collects his decades worth of research about the Celts, in order to explain these mysterious peoples to the layperson. I have read several books about the Celts, and I found this book both refreshing and thought provoking. All too often, nationalists and others hijack Celtic scholarship with their own agendas, leading to all sorts of confusion. It is worth noting that the word 'Celt' itself has been a subject of controversy for many years, with scholars such as Dr. Simon James and Dr. John Collis wanting to ... Read More:

What an excellent read, easy and not up yer jacksie stuff!
The detail was thorough and entertaining enough to hook me into this period of history.
His books have spurred me onto reading more classic translations of the origional authors Josephus and Tacitus etc.

Sometimes when reading about history it isn't all about the defined facts, or boring 2 dimensional block colour battle charts. For me it's about whether the Author can transport the reader to see, smell, and imagine their vision of how the past rolled out while maintaining the facts of the storey.
This Dando Collins does with amazing skill.

I realise this is advertised as a selection, but if you're interested in Hellenistic history as much as Roman, it is pretty disappointing what's been left out. However, there is a 2-vol. 1889 translation by Shuckburgh of all the surviving text that you can pick up for around £30 on Amazon marketplace. I do think Penguin or maybe Oxford World's classics should bring out a complete translation, though - 120 years since the last one is a little shaming.

Neil Faulkner has given us a clear, lucid, and objective appraisal of Rome, sans rosy glasses or sugar coating. A masterful work, beautifully written and thoroughly compelling and convincing! Prof. Faulkner sees through pro-Roman propaganda and portrays the predatory nature of the militaristic and imperialistic force that was Rome, backed by carefully documented research, and analyzes the contributions of the Romans to Western Civilization in a new light. This book should be required reading in every course on Rome, Western Civilization, or Classical Studies at the graduate, undergraduate, and even high school level. Don't be mislead by the notion that the book presents a "socialist" perpective. This is not a work pushing any kind of ideology; it is a sober, clear, and incisive analysis of the ... Read More:

Ross tackles his first full length novel bringing the ancient world of Rome from its humble beginnings to a modern audience with historical facts interwoven in a tale that shows that the epic heroes that modern fantasy has come to exude did have living counterparts in the ancient world. The fact that the book is dedicated to David Gemmell is also a nice touch as many a reader of his books will see parallels to the "living" heroes within the pages of this tale. A writer of history who has brought the ancient world in a more accessable way to the modern reader and as such means that he should be applauded for tackling this huge subject in such a way. If you're looking for a book to help with research this tale also fulfills the brief and as such will provide that outline for the hero that you feel is ... Read More:

Thucydides follows self-consciously on from Herodotus as a 'historian' but takes a very different tack. Partly this is due to their place in history: Herodotus was the product of a triumphant Athens leading the mediterannean world after shockingly defeating the huge Persian invasion of Greece, while Thucydides lives through the decline of Athens from her high point under Pericles through to her final defeat under Sparta. A critic of Athenian democracy and the rise of the demagogues, Thucydides is also a participant in the 37 years long war, as strategos (General) who was defeated at Amphipolis and exiled from Athens. What is amazing is his ability to stay detached and analytical, despite his personal involvement in events.
This is a heart-breaking story of the decline of a great city-state through her own ... Read More:
