The blurb inside the front cover says that Rosen used to be head of a publishing house, and this is his first book. Implication: he's not a professional historian. Looking at his notes at the back, his historical sources seem to be based largely around just a few works; Gibbon looms large, plus some of the other usual suspects like A. H. M. Jones and J. B. Bury. On the medical aspects of the plague, Google seems to have been his friend here.

Despite what on the face of it might seem the work of an amateur, this is actually quite a good, wide-ranging work, well written in spite of some occasionally odd usage of metaphor and digressions. It's not just about the plague but also considers the events of the couple of centuries leading ... Read More:

Having worked my way through almost all of the JACT course using the previous edition I decided to buy the new edition to use to complete the course and as a refresher to go back over past material. The new format is much improved in almost every respect. Perhaps the best new feature is the now combined text and vocab. in one book which prevents flipping back and forth between two books. Visually a great improvement as well, with the introduction of a second colour, new layout and better font. As a self-taught (not very proficient - yet) Greek student, the JACT course is still the best of the ones that I have used. The only downside is that now the larger format means heavier hand luggage for the daily commute but that is outweighed by the improvements ... Read More:

I have been studying this book with the Open University and found the almost vertical learning curve it presents very difficult to endure. Though the book is lovely looking - nice clear font, well illustrated - and the facing vocabulary is in the right place - generally oposite the Greek - wading through these texts is just too difficult for a beginner distance learner. The vocabulary becomes unnecessarily complicated very quickly and quite a few new words are not glossed, adding to the frustration. Despite really dogged determination and two attempts I could not get past 7c and abandoned this book entirely at that point, though I did complete the grammar and vocabulary learning to the end of section 9, using the companion grammar book and OU materials. ... 58.Britannia - The Failed State: Tribal Conflicts and the End of Roman Britain: Tribal Conflict and the End of Roman Britain by: Stuart Laycock
June 06, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Britannia - The Failed State: Tribal Conflicts and the End of Roman Britain: Tribal Conflict and the End of Roman Britain
Too long the history of sub-Roman Britain has relied too much on doubtful small snippets of written evidence, often from authors on the other side of Europe writing over a century after the events described, which too many people have accepted at face value. Really the only thing we can rely on for sure is the evidence from archaeology.

Laycock presents here a thesis, which he attempts to back up from the archaeological evidence, that the tribal kingdoms of pre-Roman Britain retained their boundaries, their identity and their accompanying tribal hatreds, throughout the Roman period. Despite the Roman administration, the province never became unified. Many of the "barabarian attacks" of the Roman period may actually have been in effect civil wars between ... Read More:

This is by all means a heavily underrated book.
Xenophon lays bare the essential characteristics of his (and our) time and its crucial kernel, independence.

Inside the Greek cities, independence meant democracy, which was the political regime in Athens. The latter's arch-rival, Sparta, had an oligarchic rule, a government controlled by a king and the aristocracy.
When Sparta defeated Athens, it put immediately a lackey oligarchic government (the Thirty) in place. The oligarchs could `do exactly what they liked with the state.' They went on a killing spree, murdering all democratic opponents, in casu, `more Athenians than all the Peloponnesians did in ten years of war.' They confiscated illegally the property of resident aliens and when people ... Read More:

I have bought this book to help with my studies in field archaeology as I need to know an extensive amount about the Roman Period and his book has everything relevant, Salway writes in such a way that the average leyman can understand this simplistic but fascinating style of writing along with the footnotes have helped me write several essays this book is a goldmine of source material - the inclusion of several maps of Roman Britain is a stroke of pure genius.

I heartilly recommend this book to anyone who hads an extensive interest in Rome & it's people & empire.

However if the reader has only a passive interest in Roman History this may be heavy reading (and not entirely suitable for schoolchildren to use as a study aid) as Salway does tend to ... Read More:
