Davidson's previous book (Fishcakes and Courtesans) was one of the best things ever written on the Ancient World. By contrast, this one should have had the serious attentions of an editor, who would, first of all, have reduced its length by at least half. And then controlled Davidson's runaway propensity for slang terms, neologisms and typographical innovations, all of which are confusing and irritating. I do now believe I have read the whole book (to do so from cover to cover in the order it is written is impossible) but I am still not clear what he is trying to say: was homosexuality the accepted norm in ancient Greece or not? It seems, reading between the lines, that Davidson thinks it wasn't (in the earlier book, he says so more clearly), ... Read More:

I read this book having already read "Ancient Greek for Dummies". Although the author undoubtedly knew his stuff and the book was well laid out I found the style rather more heavy going for some reason than many of the companion volumes in the series.

I attended this exhibition at the British Museum and it was FABULOUS! Very well done, and the book that goes along with the exhibition is quite informative. I really enjoyed both the exhibition and the book. Unfortunately, I purchased the book at the Museum and paid GBP 40 for it! I wish I had realized that it could be purchased on Amazon for a much lower price. Buy it!

Today we tend to think of 'The Roman Empire' with little thought to its two distinct stages. A republic and the transition to empire. This book is a lively read about the events leading up to Caesar being declared dictator, paving the way for his adopted son Augustus to sweep to power as the first emperor.

As is Holland's style he makes sure he gives us all the background we need to fully understand the main events. Although Augustus was skimmed over at the end. I understand however the book has to end somewhere.

This is basically as good as History gets. So readable, so engaging.

This is a splendid book. The translations by Prof. Scott-Kilvert are lively and interesting, especially for undergraduates. But the book is a pain in the neck to use because the editors have not thought it necessary to include an index. I have had to write one myself on the life of Alexander for my students who are using the book in tandem with Arrian's Campaigns of Alexander and Quintus Curtius (both of which are your books, Penguin, and both of which have indexes!).

Penguin, you have tarted up all your other books with new covers, and you have jacked up the prices accordingly, so when you get around to Alexander, who, after all, is the selling point of this eponymous tome, please include an index so that the book will become useful as well ... Read More:

I keep encouraging younger readers to embrace the classics and the Anabasis or Persian expedition is the first recommendation, that I make. An epic yarn that has crossed the ages to the most unlikely places (Consider that Xenophon's Persian Expedition was the inspiration for the 1970s film "The Warriors").
Who needs Sci-Fi and Fantasy when real history produces such heroic epics.
Inspiring but more importantly accessible ...which begs the question why more don't access it.

To call this a dictionary is somewhat of a misnoma, as there is more than a simple few lines attached to each description. Its more an encyclopedia and somewhat of an essential one for anyone studying the ancient world. for example, Alexander the Great takes full 3 pages whilst his erstwhile founding city Alexandria takes half a page with each entry containing references to almost everything one can think of, there are not only cities and people and gods described and fully cross referenced there are also ideas such as ''Edict'' or Eduction split into Greek and Roman or the definition of Freedman. These days wikipedia is considered the be all and end all but this book is itself a mini wikipedia. It allows you to look up individual ideas or gods or people and ... Read More:

Plutarch's book tells the immensely sad story of the relentless warring between the Greek City States: `Alas for Greece, how many men have you killed with your own hands.'
His masterly brushed picture of Sparta is not less than astonishing. Sparta has been one of the purest communist States on earth.
In order to stamp out arrogance, envy, crime, luxury, wealth and poverty among its citizens, the kings imposed redistribution of land, common messes for all Spartans, no free travel (foreign morals should be hidden) and no immigration (could be teachers of evil practices). Gold and silver coins were declared invalid and replaced by iron ones. Those who wanted to sin by amassing great wealth, needed vast granaries. Nepotism was impossible because children ... I would have given this book five stars if not for the fact that it does not feature a single map - not of the Balkans in question nor of the deployment of the troops in battle on the day.

However, it covers very well the build up to the battle and its aftermath. The author takes us through the mindset of the Romans at this time, when enemies were also a potential labour force or mercenaries fighting for one's cause.

You get a sense of the rivalry between both halves of the empire and cannot fail to notice the impact of Christianity on its foreign and domestic policy.

The author's style is easy and the narrative not disrupted by arguments about the veracity of any sources. That is not to say the book lacks an objective approach. On the contrary, ... Read More:

80.The Civil Wars by: Appian

Appian's account of the Roman Civil Wars seems to be a much ignored text. He wasn't a witness to the events like Caesar, and he wasn't a great biographical writer like Plutarch. Yet his work stands as the only unbroken account of the years 133 to 70 BC, making his history a rather special one.

The book doesn't end in 70 BC, but rather it covers everything to the defeat of Sextus Pompeius, Pompey Magnus's son. Along the way Appian describes the revolt of Spartacus, the Catiline conspiracy, the rise and fall of the First Triumvirate, Julius Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, and the rise of the Second Triumvirate and the terrible proscriptions that followed.

Appian isn't the best writer of the Classical World, but his book is still worth a read. John Carter's translation ... Read More:
