If you want a detailed atlas of history, for goodness sake buy Colin McEvedy's fantastic series of books. The new Historical Atlases are an immense step backwards from there. They have lots of glossy pictures, but the narrative is very lightweight and jumps about annoyingly.

Adrian Goldsworthy has combined ancient sources and modern interpretations to give us a breathtaking account of the three wars which raged between Rome and its Mediterranean rival, Carthage over the course of a century. One of his strengths is his ability to describe the complex logistics and manoeuvres of the significant battles of this era. He also gives perceptive accounts of the political machinations which brought about the policies, alliances and betrayals of the period.
The most successful and effective general of the entire tale, is Hannibal, one of the Barca family, and Goldsworthy gives him his due, describing the tactics by which he invaded Rome from Spain, and humiliated legion after Roman legion. However the ... Read More:

...The book reads quite like a textbook, but contains many interesting facts and hypotheses as posed by scholars. His views are fairly even-handed and he presents all sides equally, and in a well written prose. If you are getting this, you must get the companion too, as this often provides graphical representations as well. An Excellent book. There are a few places, for example the propaganda issue, where not all topics are covered in as complete a detail as possible, but the book is great for students for material, and references.

I purchased this book because I wanted to get away from the usual (boring) style of historical writing that focuses almost entirely on political and military fact.

It seemed promising at first; the author states in the early sections that he himself grew tired of this format and wanted to look more into the spirit of the Greeks and how they defined themselves in terms of a series of cultural polarities. He therefore explores areas such as citizen vs. alien, men vs. women etc.

For the most part, this structure certainly is different from standard historical books on the subject. However, within each chapter it does descend into exactly this kind of writing. What remains is in fact a rather bland telling of largely military ... Read More:

This is an example of history written as a thriller; Runciman has masterfully woven the tales of the two sides into a brilliant narrative of the events leading up to and the main reasons for the fall/conquest of of Constantinople (or Istanbul, depending on your point of view). He very cleverly structures the book so that, even though you know what's coming, the suspense about how it will happen just builds. I cannot praise this book highly enough.
I should also mention John Julius's trilogy on Byzantium which is an extremely readable and entertaining book.

First one thing: do not, on any account, get the abridged version. If I could take one book to a desert island, it would be this one. That's because it is extremely long, and every word of it is worth it.

Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains as relevant as ever. And this is in spite of its hugely ambitious scope, treating of the history of the Roman and Byzantine empires (both considered Roman by Gibbon) from the end of the 1st century AD to the 15th. Gibbon is a modern historian. He is shrewdly selective of his sources, judiciously reserved, and coldly analytical. He differentiates between proximate and ultimate causes. He has a humanistic but impartial point of view. At the same time, he is an 18th century Englishman. While this ... Read More:

I found this is to be a very good translation and most enjoyable reading. In my opinion Ammianus is much more fun to read than Herodotus's Histories, because he makes his world much more vivid; especially battle scenes where he exposes his military knowledge. Ammianus also makes intriguing side notes, or digressions as some could say, on different matters.

The very reason I can't give 5 stars is that the translator has omitted some of Ammianus' interesting parts in the translation. So, if someone is looking for mentions of Saracens and siege machines for example, one should consult J. C. Rolfe's translation (Loeb series). I don't, however, find Rolfe's translation as smooth and fun as this.

Finally, I'd like to give credit for useful notes and ... Read More:

I had read elsewhere of how important the Graeco-Persian wars were to western civilisation, but had no real idea why. This
rather good book starts to answer that question. The individual
Greeks, not just the city-states or their leaders, were fighting
for a concept- the freedom and value of a man himself to make his
own destiny. The centralised autocratic Persian edifice was the
antithesis of this. These wars actually decided the future of the
world, splitting it into two cultures. Thermopylae was one of the
key battles but not the decisive one.
The book really deals with the whole second Persian invasion, the
eponymous battle acting as a fulcrum. It is gripping, knowedgeable
and informative.A supposed historical bias towards the ... Read More:
