142.Capitalism and Freedom by: Milton Friedman

Books : Capitalism and Freedom
This book, printed in various formats and languages, is some indication of the fact that Milton Friedman's arguments have not lost currency in the 21st century, even though many people hotly contest their rights and wrongs. The old master of economics hardly wastes time in triggering a debate by stating in the very first chapter: "History suggests only that capitalism is a necessary condition for political freedom. Clearly it is not a sufficient condition."

Capitalism and Freedom has been derided, criticised and lauded in equal measure and for Friedmanites it remains the bible. Love him or hate him, the author himself was never one to shy away from controversy. In this book he has pened his thoughts on issues such as the control ... Read More:

143.Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew by: Ellen Notbohm

Books : Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew
A very easy and somewhat comforting read for parents still in the early stages of finding out they have a child with autism. Very positive and full of helpful insights and tips. A little sentimental at times but doesn't distract from author's overall message of how best to help your child reach their full potential. Vital reading! I will be passing on to family members and close friends.

Fortunately C# and .NET aren't the most taxing topics in software development, otherwise this book wouldn't be adequate. However although mediocre, verbose, and printed in a too-small font, it's good enough, and quite possibly the best of a so-so pack.

Absolutely brilliant book. I have just started doing web coding and having enevr done it before I was completely lost in class and not only that I couldn't follow what the tutor was saying and the practicals because I found it so tediously boring, I thought there was NO hope for me ever being able to train my mind to concentrate on boring XHTML.

Anyway after getting this book I am transformed! I read it on the way to uni read it on the way back and even read it in bed that night it is great. Very informative and so clear as well. I have quite a short attention span and get bored easily but the pictures visualisations of what the author is talkign about keeps you readind and shows you examples of what you can do. There isn't loads of text ... Read More:

If you're buying a house, building one, or simply don't know your pargetting from your parapets, then this book is for you. It's thin enough that you can read it, yet the large format allows for several line drawings on every page. Reading this book taught me more than any other pile of textbooks about how houses were put together, how they fall apart and how to put them back again. It's a paragon of clear and legible writing and the scope covers all those types of building work that you're likely to encounter in UK domestic housing; from early-Victoriana to modern insulation systems. No longer need you be baffled by batts or fail to understand a U value. Highly recommended, and the best bargain anyone buying a house more than 10 years old could find.

So many books are thick, wordy, and conceal their nuggets of wisdom, but not this one. It's not big, so you won't find full details on (eg) all of the many Linux email clients - but they get a mention.
Works well for me (ex BSD 4.x sysop in the 1980s) as well as friends with no previous knowledge of operating systems. It's the examples that are such a help - most of the things we've needed to do are covered with a brief, relevant example. We use it with Ubuntu mainly - Debian distros are not identical to Fedora but we've not seen a problem - both are Linux and conform to the POSIX standard.
Reading it cover-to-cover is logical, informative, and highly recommended. Three times, and the info is starting to stick..... Then keep it handy to look ... Read More:

I found this book an enjoyable and insightful read. The structure allows you to go back to the book for reference and as the title states gives the reader loads of ideas. I am a creative professional and I am finding this book a good starting point in discussion around issues such as style and how to use colour. Defiantly something I would recommend to fellow professionals.

Although I enjoyed around half of the entries and found them entertaining and often very touching, this book should come with a warning.... for all NHS staff who work outside of the ambulance service! While the author acknowledges that his comments are not meant to tar all NHS employees with the same brush, and definitely the shortages of staff put pressure on all, there are several occasions where doctors, nurses and midwives are made out to be rude and uncaring and often this book descends into ranting about these professional groups. While dipping in and out of a blog the odd rant is ok, I found that in a book form these frequent angry entries got in the way of the flow of an otherwise enjoyble book.
