After a very good start (first 2 chapters) in which the author summarizes the development of US economics from 1900 to the Reagan-Thatcher era, the book rapidly deteriorates into a jargon packed text. Some of it may be US English, but is still unintelligible to the layperson e.g. quants, barbelled, scarfing up, total positions to equity, work off positions, leveraged buyout deals, bought the call, buy a put, megaportfolio asset management, arbitrageurs swoop, roiled bond, counterparty surveillance, and so it goes on. Few of these terms are defined or explained. This may be fine for someone who understands the jargon, but then why bother buying the book in the first place?

i was really disapointed in this book; i was expecting practical advice on start ups...this seems to be aimed at the aspiring tycoon, or someone who is setting up a massive company as opposed to an SME.

overall, good if you're interested in business theory in general but useless if you want a clear guide on how to set up a small business.

Although a little long-winded in places, this is a good reference book for anyone wanting a slightly more than basic understanding of various corporate finance concepts, talking about derivatives, hedges, ratios etc. It was certainly useful to me obtaining an A in a module in it at university!

There's always something compelling about reading someone's account of getting themselves deeper and deeper into mortal trouble. Then add the racy dark humour that is peppered throughout the book as Nick Leeson looks back on his futile attempts to rectify his increasingly desperate trading situation, whilst those around him are oblivious to the impending disaster. The narrative cleverly reveals just enough detail to vividly depict the general atmosphere of things without being bogged down in flowery descriptions, helping to maintain a good pace.

This is a classic story of a classic dilemma - what to do if you (or someone you are responsible for) makes a serious mistake. Do you face the immediate consequences and come clean with those ... Read More:

I bought this book a few months ago as I am starting the AAT foundation course in September. I know a bit about accounting but was clueless about book keeping. I found this book really helpful and easy to understand. It has given me a headstart for when I do start studying. And I would recommend this book to anyone who is studing for an accounting course or setting up their own small business.

Whilst I slightly disagree with the back cover comment that the book is written in a "jargon-free" style (a basic knowledge of Economic theory would be useful), I thought the book was highly useful in unravelling the mysteries surrounding the 'Northern Rock Crisis'. I studied Economics as part of an MBA course and this book improved my understanding of the dismal science. The book is article based which I wasn't aware of when I bought it, so if you're looking for a beginners guide, I recommend you look elsewhere. Try Sloman's Essential Economics or 'Free Lunch' by David Smith.

If you have just come across the topic of monetary reform or have been investigating the matter for some time, I urge you buy this book now, please. There will be information even ardent researchers will not know.

This book has it all in one read, from the history of how 'civilisation' has become increasingly divided between a corporate elite and the common man on the street, to the very solutions the world and humanity needs to solve the problems of society and the increasing environmental degredation.

Web of debt explains that we, society, are on the cusp of great social abyss, caused by the impending implosion of the monetary/banking system at its final limits of risk, return and reliance. So please buy this book, read it and give it to ... Read More:
