Probably this book went way over my head.

The one insight I think I got from it was that during the tech boom, many of the new products were appearing, not because of some fundamental increase in the rate of innovation brought on by the Web, but because of all the money pouring into startups because investors believed the Web would lead to such innovations for technological reasons. A phenomena Soros calls "reflexivity", I guess. But even without knowing that it seemed clear a boom was in progress that would eventually bust. But how to know when? It doesn't seem this book or Soros could tell you.

I hear Soros became a billionaire through his investments and that seemed well beyond a chance event, but I didn't understand ... Read More:

I found this book well written and down to the point. The strengths: sensible forecasts about future scenarios, good investment suggestions, useful tips on how to avoid common pitfalls, helps to concentrate on few ideas (avoiding getting confused by the tons of new suggestions coming out every day from the media). The weakness: the 10 big ideas are not that original and the book is sometimes too shallow. And the annoying bit: it is OK that the authors show they believe so much in their ideas to invest in them, but it's annoying to see Jim and Al suggesting more than ones that one of the best ways to invest is through one of Jim's businesses, listed among only two or three other options. It might be me but I think I have already given them money for the book, they ... Read More:

Author Nathan Lewis drops the dismal science of economics to another level of despair by interpreting it as the "cruel science" of realpolitik. True believers in the gold standard, known as "gold bugs," believe the U.S. could face hyperinflation because it destroyed the gold standard and made every nation vulnerable to contagious inflation. As Lewis explains, ever since President Richard Nixon left the gold standard in 1971, the dollar has been backed by the U.S. government's "full faith and credit," not its gold reserves. However, he also introduces theorists who do not advocate the gold standard, since nations can realize its advantages only by pegging their currencies to short-term interest rates. As shown in this thorough, readable history, national treasuries ... Read More:

I can only describe this particular edition of Wealth of Nations as a useful crash course on Adam Smith's discourse, mindful of the fact that there were five editions of this historically significant work. But then that's the beauty of this condensed compendium.

Most editions available in the market draw on Smith's Wealth of Nation Volume I (Of the causes of improvement), Volume II (Of the Nature, Accumulation, and Employment of Stock) and Volume III (Of the different Progress of Opulence in different Nations) at the most. However, this edition contains healthy inclusions from Book IV (Of Systems of political Economy) and Book V (Of the Revenue of the Sovereign or Commonwealth). For this alone, the editor Kathryn Sutherland deserves credit.

Books : Getting To Yes: Negotiating agreement without giving in
The message is very good. Quality of text is not that great. I don't mean that there is lots of spelling mistakes or such but I felt the text was heavy. Time after time I almost started to sleep or think something completely else than the book. That is really a bummer. Excellent ideas but boring package.

I'm a great fan of Jim Rogers and his insights into the world economy, especially when his personal enthusiasm makes its way into what he is writing and his latest book on Investing in China is no exception.

I'd recommend it as a good starter on the general situation in China and its comparison with the USA 100-150 years ago, though overall, despite being an interesting read, I know little more about how a normal investor like me can invest in China at reasonable cost, and if and when I should be doing it than I did before reading this. I also found he often talks about market highs and lows, but without any real help as to how we might identify them. Some charts showing performance of key indicators such as the major chinese markets / indexes, rises in ... Read More:
