An excellent book which offers a good insight into the LBO business and the workings of Wall Street during the 1980s. There are some serious amounts of money involved and some very amusing characters - It almost reads like a comedy when detailing the exploits and excess of the chairman of RJR Nabisco with his fleet of company jets and "superstar" cronies.

Essentially, it reads like a thriller and although a little confusing (and perhaps too detailed on the history / background in parts), it is nevertheless a solid, enjoyable read and a 'keeper'. Recommended

I already had a good knowledge of the financial systems, but wanted a book that would provide me a complete insight into all areas of the financial world. I have read many academic style books over the years and this is by far the best.
The authors style is clear and very easy to read. He explains things in a very simple way to digest and understand without dumbing down content.
Overall a fantastic easy to read guide to the intricacies of the financial city and the types of people and businesses that operate within it.

If you compare the 1907 crisis that struck U.S. and European financial institutions with 2008's economic emergencies, you will discover striking similarities. (In fact, the uncanny parallels have made this fascinating book a bestseller.) Strong interconnectivity between financial firms meant that trouble at one migrated to others. Both crises involved serious credit and liquidity concerns. Both provoked populist attacks against Wall Street. In part, the trusts hit trouble in 1907 because of insufficient regulation. The 1907 crisis started on Wall Street, and quickly jumped to European institutions. In 2008, the trajectory was even more global. Of course, marked differences also separate these episodes. In 1907, fabled financier J.P. Morgan exercised ... Read More:

This book has all the answers in a practical and easy-to-read format. I would highly recommend this book to all managers, would-be managers, students in management or any other discipline which requires management. It has helped me manage myself through a non-management degree as it has valuable information on many aspects of self-management as well as that of others.

I want to agree with the previous, rather brief reviewer who found this book to be somewhat complicated.

While it certainly IS very comprehensive (as in it covers all you want to know, plus more), the manner in which the material is presented at times comes accross overly technical and complicated - especially for the novice. Furthermore, the layout, while visually appealing, doesn't seem thought through properly. Much too often, the text discusses key concepts by refering to example-boxes which, for some reason, are inconveniently printed pages away from the complementing text. This often disrupts the learning flow and thus may hinder (easy) comprehension of even the most basic concepts such as standard overhead absorption costing, budgeting, ... Read More:

The title of this book makes quite a claim. Niall Ferguson is a Harvard University professor from the UK, who produced a volume on the story of the Rothschild financial dynasty in the late 1990s, The book certainly has a number of interesting features e.g. its summary of recent events both precipitating and within the housing market 'crisis' and international commercial relationships between superpowers. Nevertheless, the impression is that the work - fascinating though it is in parts - may just have been a little bit 'scraped together', somewhat hurried.

Given the lightening blitz which has rocked all corners, streets and avenues of the globe's financial institutions, this is perhaps understandable and even forgivable, almost. Recent news bulletins ... Read More:

That's how much I enjoyed reading this book! For me personally, Mark's book has been a real eye opener and has made me re-evaluate totally my approach to trading and investing. Whilst a fair chunk of this book does espouse standard common sense themes that you will find in virtually every investment book worth it's salt, there are also a lot of ideas in here that goes against conventional wisdom, and certainly gives the reader much food for thought. One of the chapters that I kept reading over and over again was the one on why you should concentrate, not diversify, your portfolio; that goes against everything you've ever heard before from so-called 'expert advisers', but when you sit back and really think about it, what they want to achieve isn't necessarily the ... As an accounting dunce, I've tried to read a lot of books about basic accounting to help improve the skills I need in my business. In my experience, most of these books seem to use a lot of unexplained jargon or fail to put the information into a practical context. This book scores highly on both counts - everything is clearly explained and the examples have been very easy to relate to my own experience.

Highly Recommended.
