Practical, very readable and full of sound advice which works. Genuinely useful books for new managers are rare in my experience and this is one of the best I've come across.

recently took my foundation exam and everything i needed to know was in this book, id almost say that the questions in this book are slightly harder than the questions i encountered in the exam. like a lot of technical books this is not the easiest book to read and id recommend having small reading sessions as your mind will start switching off if you try to read too much in one session. read it through, then dip into it at various points that you cant remember, there are chapter review tests at the end of each chapter and a sample exam at the end of the book. id also recommend taking the tests with a notepad, go through the whole test with your answers, marking the ones your unsure of, then check the answers ... This book gives a practical introduction to PRINCE2. However, PRINCE2 certification is not based on the content of this book or any other, apart from, of course, "Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2". So, where there are grey areas in PRINCE2, and there are many, the latter book is the reference. The other books may offer sensible advice, but if they were to contradict the reference book, or provide information not in the Reference book, you could end up being right but getting it wrong, at lest as far as the exam is concerned! My advice, if you want the PRINCE qualification, is to get and study the reference book, using a formal training course / trainer. When I first skimmed through the book I thought, oh great a whole bunch of incomplete views that they couldn't make a book out of, then realising they'd made a book out of it, sneaky. As I read through some of the individual lessons, made easy as all 293 are listed out under handy topic headings in the table of contents, I realised that what this book actually provides. It gives you 293 across the desk brief mentoring sessions that you wish you could with some guru like character. This book is like having Kaner, Bach or Pettichord sat there working with you, answering your questions in a thought provoking and considered way. I would just like to point out that I believe the previous review was intended for another book the 70-444 Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Administration Solution by Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 part of the MCITP: Database Administrator series. This book however covers all the topics comprehensively and thoroughly for the MCITP: Enterprise Administrator 70-622 exam, with a complete layout and objectives set at the beginning of each chapter and practices to complete at the end. There is however a few errors in the book though such as in chapter 3 where you are instructed to use the GPMC.MSC command in the search feature on the start menu only to find that it has been removed in the service pack 1 release of windows vista. One could say that Mr Yourdon is cynical or negative person on basis of this book. Unfortunately cynicism can easily be justified just by observing how crazy IT industry now a days is. This book honestly admits that brown substance has hit propeller and continues to doing. Simply job of the IT professional is clean up the mess and rescue what there is left to safe without further damage to property or people. Some instructions what to do when task is impossible, there is no proper budget or resources is described on this book. Of course book is not silver bullet but with thinking the way Mr Yourdon instructs is much better than not thinking at all when you join next death march project.
