First off, the coverage of administering LDAP, in particular the OpenLDAP server, is excellent. Choosing to focus on OpenLDAP is wise since commercial directory service products tend to cost a lot of money and aren't things that you can casually play with (or, as in my case, develop software against). His chapters on putting directory services to work - using LDAP ro replace NIS, using it for authentication and integration with other LDAP services - are very good as well.

However, the coverage of what directory services are could be deeper. The author acknowledges that some explanation is required, and provides some background information but not nearly enough. In a future edition I would like to see more coverage of directory ... Read More:

I've been developing applications on Windows since LONG before the days of 32 bit Windows (let alone 64 bit) and pre-emptive multi-threading. Over all those years I'm glad to say I've never had need for the information in this book - until now... Having been doing some consultancy for a company with many applications that exhibit all sorts of faults on company sites, it became necessary to find out more about debugging Windows applications outside of a development or test environment.

I've always made a point of building applications on the highest compiler warning level, passing the source code through PC-Lint, executing the code under BoundsChecker, Purify, Quantify, Pure Coverage, doing lots of unit testing, system testing etc. ... Read More:

I had read a few reviews on this book, all positive so I was really looking forward to reading it.

While the book encourages some very worthwhile and useful techniques I did find that many of the tips were practices that any reasonable software developer should be considering as a matter of course, not just to be agile.

I would say that this is an excellent read for developers with only a few years of experience with some great tips on how to be more productive.

However for more experienced people it should just be memory jogger and give you a chance to become enthused and really try to do the 'right' things again. Get through the 'software is alot like surfing' analogies and some of the more ivory tower ... Read More:

Many other books have covered similar material, for physics engines, rendering engines and for AI. I have read none that have really done the subject justice, looking in depth at the techniques and providing background information to make sensible decisions. This book changes that: it is a superb, detailed, accurate (as far as I have checked so far) and timely account of one of the most awkward bits of modern game construction.

The biggest strength of this book is its broad range. Ericson steps through the whole gamut of collision detection tasks: from simple collision tests for bullet intersections, through to accurate collision manifold generation for moving objects (the kind of collision data needed for high end physics simulation). ... This book doesn't cover the theory of patterns, it shows how to apply them to various example pieces of code. It also warns against putting patterns in everywhere, and has an excellent example on the overuse of patterns.

A lot of the patterns and refactorings in the book I had heard of before, a few I hadn't and the examples explained their usage particularly well.

This is one of those books that you can read for a few minutes at a time, as each refactoring is covered in its own section over 10 pages or so.

This is definitely one of the best patterns books I have read.

This is the first software engineering book I've read in years. As a project manager, I rarely become involved in software design, except perhaps to sit in on reviews, but it is useful and interesting to improve one's understanding of the other important disciplines involved in projects.

Design patterns had their origins in architecture, and the work of Christopher Alexander, who is an architect (of buildings) and has had enormous influence on design, in both computer science and architecture. A design pattern is a conceptual solution to a common problem, and a good working knowledge of the ones which have been identified, according to both this book and the developers I've asked while reading it, essential for any developer designing software ...
