The amount of errors in this book is shocking- at least Microsoft have a list of errata on their web site. It's going to take literally hours to fix all the errors in my copy. Did nobody proof read this?

I have a vast collection of books on Agile methods. All of them, apart from this book, leave a gap concerning how to deal with projects where deep analysis is required and yet the project still be Agile. These are the sorts of problems that Enterprise's deal with and are a million miles away from typical web-based applications, which I tend to see as broad but shallow, supporting what is unkindly called "whim-driven" requirements. This book addresses the full range of projects and shows how to preserve the benefits of Agile in large-scale, in-depth projects. The style is readable with a refreshing lack of agile dogma, replaced by attention to principles rather than rules. By doing this it provides scalable solutions. Use Cases make an appearance ... After receiving a brief introduction to TDD at university I realized the tremendous benefits that this technique has. I also realized that there were gaps in my knowledge of TDD and so I decided to buy this book to brush up on it.

The book did answer many questions I had of how to best to use TDD, as well as showing me the wonderful extensions and tools that exist for JUnit.

I do have some quibbles with the book however. For starters, the author seems to use methods before hes written them. Leaving me to look back through the book to see if ive missed something. He tells us that there may be some bits missing and that we can go to the printed URL to download the full sorce code. However this link is broken and there are no responses ... Read More:

I am a professional programmer, and having read both this and the Gang of Four design patterns book, I can honestly say I prefer this one. The GoF book is excellent if you need to discuss potential options for software design with colleagues, and pretty good if you need to implement one of them. However, the patterns in this book (POSA) are more wide-ranging, useful, and practical than those in Design Patterns, which in comparison appear too theoretical.

I would suggest that reading Design Patterns first is a good introduction to the field of patterns. After that, read this book to see the power of patterns. The explanations of layers (eg ISO/OSI), broker systems (eg CORBA), and MVC systems (eg most spreadsheets) as generic systems are absolutely ... Read More:

This book is written in such a way that it is almost as if you are having a conversation with Joel about UI design. It presents all the major concepts about UI design without assuming you are a UI guru but also without treating you as a simpleton that need to have everything explained to you. Joel has an entertaining and engaging style.

You will find your self wanting to continue reading, and learning. You will find yourself thinking - "aha that is why it's that way" or "no wonder the customer alway complains about that bit" or maybe just "that is what I was doing then" when you finally know what the name is for the concept you applied without knowing.

All in all I would HIGHLY recommend this for new and experienced UI designer alike as a ... Read More:

I see a lot of good reviews for this book but I have to say I found it difficult to locate the parts which described how to design good OO.

It's very messily put together, and repeats itself a great deal telling you about UML and what OO is. I think I must have read that description about fifty times!

Personally I will be looking for another book to teach me good OO, as this one failed to provide the answers and teachings I was looking for.

Test Driven - Lasse Koskela/Manning

I have read this book a few weeks ago and now I am getting started to really apply it in a project.
In the field of TDD, this book is one of the best books I have ever read.
The book is easy to ready, easy to understand and well-written.

The author divided the book in three parts:

The first one introduces the concepts/the topics: TDD and Acceptance TDD. It presents an overview of TDD, a nice tutorial that presents you TDD from the ground and even how to apply it to a working code (welcome to refactoring ). Nice introduction to ATDD.
The part is well written and will make you understand very well the concepts.

The second one tries to demonstrate how we can apply TDD ... Read More:
