I did not find this book very helpful. But then I do not find the step-by-step approach suits my learning style. It essentially walks the reader through the creation & development of an example Web site.
The book would be ideal for someone who wants to create a web site WITHOUT needing to understand what they were doing (by altering only the bare minimum of text etc & following the example).
But if you want to UNDERSTAND FrontPage then this book is NOT the correct one to buy.

This book is excellent, for the following reasons.

1. It provides a lot of very useful, non-obvious advice that I don't think is available in other books. At least, I have read 5 or 6 other books on open-source software, and none of them cover much of the material in this book.

2. The writing style is clear and conversational, which makes it easy to read.

3. The book is short, which makes a welcome change from the bloated 800+ page books that are so common in the computer industry.

I am currently writing some software that I hope to release under an open-source license. I am confident that I have sufficient skills to write the software and even document it. However, there is much more to releasing ... Read More:

Until January of this year I had managed to spend my career with organisations that used Lotus Notes. Then I changed jobs and found myself using Outlook. Whilst the basics of Outlook are pretty intuitive, I found myself out of the comfort zone with a new piece of software that I couldn't operate to the same level of proficiency that I had with Notes.

The Quicksteps guide fitted the bill perfectly for all those 'How do I....' moments, as well providing more detailed information that allowed me to consider how I wanted to set Outlook up to get the most from it (folders, scheduling, follow-up, etc).

The A4 landscape layout works well, along with full colour throughout. It answered all my initial questions and has since stayed on ... Read More:

When I first saw this book, I was surprised by how easy it looks. The first chapter gives a very simple introduction to computers and computing. Later chapters introduce Java programming at a very gentle pace, so the book is obviously aimed at the complete beginner. Even so, If you were to work your way through the book, you could learn the most important features of Java and start programming right away.

I bought this book, because it has been a while since I programmed in Java and desperately needed a newer book, as the Java language changes very rapidly. Keyboard input use to be a painful experience in Java and in many books first appears near the end of the book. This book uses the scanner class which is much easier to use than any ... Read More:

This book assumes you're already proficient in C++ and basic OOP design principles, and considers design at a level one higher than individual classes. You'll learn how to arrange your classes into modules and packages, and then how to organise communication within and between these higher-level constructs. Nonetheless, the book never forgets that the important thing is working C++ code, not diagrams and acronyms, so it's always practical.

There are two core advantages to the designs discussed in this book: maintaining the correct level of abstraction, and reducing recompilation times. Performance issues always run the risk of becoming outdated fairly quickly, and to a certain extent, some of the timing material is no longer relevant. In ... Read More:

I bought this book as an experienced project manager who has worked historically in organisations espousing either overly-prescriptive or overly-free development methods, wanting to learn a little more about the standard "Agile" practices.

Larman includes lots of good information on why iterative and incremental delivery pays dividends over more "traditional" methods such as the Waterfall, but I found the presentation to be overly fussy and a little too evangelical.

The text is overburdened with references to other publications which may be great if you're fighting an organisational struggle to implement agile methods but if you are looking for practical advice these are of little value. Likewise some of the tables and diagrams ... Read More:

This is the first review I've ever written but felt it was important to after reading the previous reviews on this book, since they nearly stopped me from buying it...

I have just passed 70-548 and despite the bad reviews I stuck with my tried and tested method of preparing for previous microsoft exams, by just reading the recommended text - I can't stick reading MSDN!!!

I've got to say that compared with the previous prep guides I've read for the 70-536 and 70-526 exams IMHO this was much better written and much easier to read. Picking up on a previous review, I could only count 4 authors and I couldn't differentiate the chapters each of them had written, which I am pretty sure I could with previous texts - in particular the 70 ...
