There are good and bad things about this book. I like the fact that it is a manageable size, gives you a somewhat high-level overview of Word 2003's capabilities, and is very interactive with its multiple exercises in each chapter. However, it is in these exercises where problems lay. Before completing the exercises, you must download the Microsoft Press work files from the accompanying CD. That's easy. However, when it comes to the exercises themselves, I experienced instances where the exercise instructions did not marry with the content of the files I was working with. At last some science (and pragmatism) to assist with writing requirements documents! I found this book particularly useful in improving my approach to analysing customer needs - the chapter on estimating based on requirements provides some very practical tips. Here's a quote that gives an idea of the author's viewpoint: "Note that I'm not suggesting you create more requirements documentation.... focusing on the appropriate contents like this can actually lead to shorter documents" If you find yourself defining software project requirements, I reckon this book will help.

Just brilliant. Great source of information on different types and groups of patterns. Each topic is explained very well and can be read independently of each other. Contents are excellent and covers all the information to put you on track of writing great code. Authors successfully catch reader's interest and carry it throughout the book. Truly a great source of information, written in a very good manner. A must have book for every J2EE developer, don't miss it.

This book is a rarity, both academically and practically sound. Any one interested in process or organsitional improvement will find that this book is excellent. Having two parts, the first being the history and thinking behind CMMI and its basis on the well established Capability Maturity Model. For academics and researchers this is good stuff with it being well written, referenced, and the arguements logically constructed on the subjects of product and process improvement. However it is in the second part that there is the most value. Being split up into chapters on specific subjects, for example risk management or project management, it provides instructions and steps to building measurable, and flexible organisational processes ... This book contains many very well written examples of Design Patterns. It contains many of the lesser known patterns and would be a great book to both the new and experienced AS3 developer. I would recommend this book to all levels of AS3 developers.

This book is an excellent diversion from reading text books or doing normal work, but it's conclusions are still highly valid for any project. I found it a humourous read, and for virtually every point made I found my self nodding in agreement. I highly recommend lending the book to your boss prior to a personal appraisal, as the first two points are about how worthy good developers are! Any software developer should get this book for a bit of light reading, and bring back those memories of past project disasters!
