I was a faithful reader of the column "The Craftsman" by "Uncle Bob" in Software Development Magazine before reading this book, so, I sort of knew what I was getting at when started to read this. First this is a generic book about agile and modern software development. It mainly covers principles, patterns and practices (PPP), but, it also provides some content on Methodology and processes (e.g., XP). The first chapters are easy to read and the difficulty starts to grow as you go through the book. The style is kept from the 4th chapter on, with the text being interrupted by good example code (C++ and Java) that is also very easy to read. This is a great book that prepares you to plan and deploy a messaging solution for your enterprise based on Exchange Server 2007, but also great for those who want to prepare for the MCITP 70-238 Exam. Topics that are covered in this book are planning the Exchange Server 2007 deployment, but also plan the Exchange topology deployment, upgrades and migrations, high availability implementation, monitoring & reporting. I liked the "exam tips" that are everywhere in the book, "practices" and also the "quick check" questions at the end of each lesson. wow.. agree completely with the poster above. Im a student in my second year of a computer games development degree. I feel as though ive just gained a MASSIVE headstart against my fellow students! It almost makes me feel guilty if i dont go and tell everyone i know on my course to get this book aswell! Full of EXCELLENT advice, and packed full of tips. Before now i knew the theory, and accepted it, but never really knew ...why??...or how topics actually fitted into the bigger picture. The hilarious thing about this book is that if you open up the PDF copy on the accompanying CD-ROM, you'll see that the book was authored not in Microsoft Word 2003, but in Adobe FrameMaker. This says it all, really. I did find the book useful, it's gets about 80% of the way to full coverage of all "power user" features, but the remaining 20% descends into a haze of marketing spin and handwaving. Close, but no cigar.

I am normally a big fan of O'Reilly books but this needs to be more of a 'definitive guide'. I honestly feel that if you only read this book you really won't know what you are doing with Hibernate - it only skims over the subject and spends far too much time off-subject, talking about Maven etc. For example, the book does not cover second-level caching in Hibernate. This is a key feature which can improve application performance, but there is no reference for it in the index and almost no mention of it in the book. It just says 'switch off caching' around page 50 and doesn't mention it again. Also, there is no discussion of locking strategies - e.g. optimistic vs pessimistic locking - which is essential to understand if you are building ... Read More:
