I found this book to be an excellent text when learning TDD. Being a contractor this book brought me upto speed on how to do TDD, invaluable when you need to write good quality tests for code.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is begining in Java, as i think its essential you know how to write code the right way. As for more experianced developers, i think the book is worth a read and you can read it in a short space of time due to simple writing style.

This book is written in a clear language, easy to understand. I found chapter 3 (Software Development Based on Reusable Technology) very helpful with its client-server example. Excellent work!

I too am somewhat disappointed with the lack of more formal treatment of selected aspects of various topics and issues. More concise and formal supplements to the well-written but sometimes verbose text would help clarify and solidify understanding of core concepts.

I am certainly grateful that the authors didn't waste space on examples from 'the business world' and the 'financial environment'. The more interesting, challenging and critical problems are, and will increasingly be, elsewhere, especially in ever-larger and increasingly complex real-time communication and control systems applications.

I have found this book a useful resource for my software project management module in my computer science degree.

The book is fairly straightforward and clear.

It maybe doesn't have as much detail as I would have liked, but it does the job well, and it is not that expensive, compared to other similar books which can be £40+

For those studying project management, this is definitely worth a look.

My CSS roadmap has consisted of the following three books:

1. Beginning CSS Web Development: From Novice to Professional
2. CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions
3. Pro CSS & HTML Design Patterns

I have also ploughed through the O'reilly books (useful but dry) and a few others, but the above three stood out in my mind as the most useful.

Beginning CSS stands out because it is really useful right from the word go. Its examples are well documented and it is easy to read. By the time I had finished it I was already designing my first website in a standards-based fashion. I had done sites before that, but they were a complete mess (both front and back end!) in comparison to my output ... Read More:

This book has three goals. To introduce Design Patterns, introduce Ruby and explain how the latter simplifies the former. That it manages to do so in 330 pages, without over-simplifying or stresing one goal at the expense of another, is an amazing achievement. Highly recommended to anyone interested in Design Patterns, regardless of their current language.

It's a truism that Javascript is the language that everyone uses but nobody knows. But increasingly programmers are turning to this fascinating language to solve more and more real world integration and webapp usability problems. Protoype and Script.aculo.us are in this space.

This book dives straight in with a tutorial of why AJAX driven programming makes such sense and explains a lot of the underlying concepts. It shows several different ways of achieving the same end and explains the pros and cons of each one. It's a good solid intro.

The book then moves on to introduce script.aculo.us. This is a toolkit that aims to make whizzy user interfaces a lot simpler. Drag and drop and the other complex parts of script.aculo.us are explained clearly ... Read More:
