I read this book about 2 years ago and passed my 70-270 exam with around 85% ... no complaints there. The book gave me everything I needed to pass the exam and its not as if I studied it over and over again. I read through various chapters for a few weeks and then read pretty much the whole thing the week before my exam and that was it, so although it is quite bulky you dont need to worry about memorising every single line..

* Eric eloquently describes the software development environment. I wholly concur with his take that software should be "supple" and it's organic/evolutionary nature should allow for refactoring to facilitate the refinement of a software product.
* I wish more companies adopted this philosophy, instead of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it approach". I thoroughly agree with the refactoring approach as it leads to other breakthroughs and the simplification pays of dividends in the end in the maintenance cycle of a project.
* This book is complemented well by Martin Fowler Refactoring and Analysis Patterns books.
* If your are into Agile, Test Driven Development or Extreme Programming you will find this book gives you more "bang ... Read More:

I'd advise people to ignore the negative reviews for the following reasons:

1) People now talk about specific refactorings so, like design patterns, you need to know the names.
2) It was never supposed to teach you good design. If you want to learn that there are good books out there (including by Craig Larman and Robert C. Martin).
3) Some of it is basic but you can ignore that stuff if you want to, and when your doing some of the more complicated refactorings they could well be useful.
4) As Martin Fowler points out you don't need to read it cover to cover, in fact he advises you use it as a reference.

What this does teach you is how to iteratively improve bad code, something every developer needs to ... Read More:

I'm disappointed with this book. I hoped to find much more depth about Scrum than can be gleaned from the Web. What it has to say, it says well, and the general point (that Scrum is better) is competently argued and substantiated. The reasons I can only give three stars are: firstly, the quality of graphics is appalling (could be bettered by a six year old with a Mac Plus); secondly, the price: this book would be fine for £[...].

If you only buy one software development book this year, buy this one. It will change the way you think about your work.

Lean development was started by Toyota in the 50s when Ford was selling more cars in a day than they were in a decade. They looked at all their development activities to see how they could develop quicker and cheaper and get closer to what the customer wanted. They were so successful that now all car manufacturers have to follow the principles they developed just to remain competitive.

The Poppendiecks' book shows how to apply these lean principles to software development. The first chapter gives an overview, including listing the seven principles. They then take a chapter per principle, showing how to apply this principle to software development. ... Read More:

I have this and the Pragmatic one. I think the Pragmatic one is the better book, it's much more readable but then I think this one becomes more of a reference book.

So, if you can't make your mind up, go for the Pragmatic one. For the best of both worlds, get both!
