I have this and the Pragmatic one. I think the Pragmatic one is the better book, it's much more readable but then I think this one becomes more of a reference book.

So, if you can't make your mind up, go for the Pragmatic one. For the best of both worlds, get both!

This book could very easily have been written in 1 page.
Write your tests first, and when necessary start with very small steps.
That is it, reading and remembering that, as useful a piece of information as it is, should save you about £25.
Kent Beck manages to string those two ideas over 200 pages, admittedly often very blank pages.
If you can buy it for less than £5 then get it otherwise leave well alone.

This book assumes no prior knowledge and is great for novice project users. It has small self contained lessons that guide the reader through creating, refining, pubishing and managing projects using Project 2003. It concentrated on the tool and unlike some books doesn't tell you how to manage your project which I think makes it quite well focussed.
However, if you have used project to manage even a few projects, 50% or more of this book is no good to you.
I have used Project for many years and bought the book to exploit some advanced features of this version and found myself more than a little disappointed.
There are some advanced techniques that are not in the book, which surprised me. The book concentrates a fair proportion to Project Server ... Read More:

I've been a business/systems analyst for about 12 years, and read about 2-3 books a year to keep upto date. I went on a UML course, and this book was recommended by the course tutor.
I think its one of the best UML books I've ever read (and I've read about 20), and indeed one of the best books on analysis I've ever read. What I really like about it is that there are lots and lots of example models, so you're left in no doubt about what the message is and you get to see lots of ways of modelling scenarios.
I will definitely be reading their next book.

Unlike some design books this starts out slowly and builds up with clear steps and reason for design. Its in Java but if you understand C# or even Delphi (collections aside ) you can follow this.

This book is very thorough and probably a great reference but if you want to get up and running asap then this isn't the book to choose. The bulk of the "code" consists merely of function prototypes which I can't see the point of at all. There is virtually no sample code that shows how something practical might be achieved so maybe buy this book if you're starting to get heavily into WCF - but not when you're starting off.

I am currently studying my Masters in IT, with the speciality of Software Engineering. Since I study online, this is the textbook provided to us as our reference to do our reading. I thought - from the book's title - that I had the perfect book!
With all due respect to the author (Ian Sommerville), I did not like it. It was nicely divided into 3 appropriate sections, but many of its chapters referred to examples and explanations in later (or even previous) chapters. I read alot of "more on this in chapter **" or "the example in figure x.ii" (when we are reading in later chapters). Many of my colleagues also complained about the book. I had to go back and forth between the chapters to understand what is being said (after having read each paragraph a couple of times). ... Read More:
